Summary

Friedrich Schiller's 'Mary Stuart' is a captivating historical play that delves into the tumultuous relationship between Queen Elizabeth I of England and Mary, Queen of Scots. Set in the backdrop of political intrigue and personal rivalry, Schiller masterfully intertwines fact with fiction, creating a compelling narrative that explores themes of power, betrayal, and the struggle for sovereignty. The play is written in Schiller's signature poetic style, with lyrical language and poignant monologues that add depth to the characters and their motivations. 'Mary Stuart' is a classic example of German Sturm und Drang literature, characterized by its emotional intensity and dramatic conflicts. Schiller's portrayal of these iconic historical figures is both nuanced and thought-provoking, challenging the audience to consider the complexities of leadership and moral responsibility. Through his vivid characters and gripping plot, Schiller invites readers to reflect on the timeless themes of ambition, loyalty, and the consequences of power.

    'We'll tell the same old stories, all over again. And we won't complain. Because it's Christmas.'
    It's Christmas Day, sort of, and Alice, Mike and Tess – three generations of the one family – are busy preparing a feast, singing songs, spinning yarns and squabbling about snacks… like only a close family can. But someone is missing from the table.
    Telling their stories in turns, and breaking off for the odd musical interlude, the family pass the time waiting for Tess's mum to arrive. As they do, we see a picture of how one family forms its traditions – and how those traditions matter most when there are problems on the horizon.
    The Last Noël by Chris Bush is a funny, moving, uplifting play with original songs. An innovative festive drama, it captures the unique bonds of family and how coming together to share stories and a meal can be a modern Christmas miracle.
    It was first produced in 2019 by Attic Theatre Company and Arts at the Old Fire Station on a tour of venues around London, before a Christmas run at the Old Fire Station in Oxford.

    William Collins Books and Decca Records are proud to present ARGO Classics, a historic catalogue of classic prose and verse read by some of the world’s most renowned voices. Originally released as vinyl records, these expertly remastered stories are now available to download for the first time.
    ‘If music be the food of love, play on;
    Give me excess of it, that, surfeiting,
    The appetite may sicken, and so die.’
    A comedic romance of mistaken identity, Twelfth Night begins with a shipwreck, splitting up Viola and her twin brother, Sebastian. Alone in a strange land, Viola disguises herself as a male servant, Cesario, in order to work for the Duke Orsino. Orsino is in love with Lady Olivia, but it is Cesario that Olivia falls for. A farcical tale of misplaced love, confusion, gender-swapping and aspiration, Twelfth Night remains one of Shakespeare’s best-loved and inventive comedies.
    All of the Shakespeare plays within the ARGO Classics catalogue are performed by the Marlowe Dramatic Society and Professional Players. The Marlowe was founded in 1907 with a mission to focus on effective delivery of verse, respect the integrity of texts, and rescue neglected plays by Shakespeare’s contemporaries and the less performed plays of Shakespeare himself. The Marlowe has performed annually at Cambridge Arts Theatre since its opening in 1936 and continues to produce some of the finest actors of their generations.
    Thurston Dart, Professor of Music at London University and a Fellow of Jesus College Cambridge, directed the music for this production.
    The full cast includes: Derek Godfrey; Patrick Garland; Peter Orr; John Barton; Ian Lang; Tony Whitehead; Patrick Wymark; Robert Eddison; Tony Church; David Coombes; Peter Pears; Jill Balco; Dorothy Tutin; Prunella Scales.
    In the realm of European theatre, Twelfth Night by William Shakespeare stands at the top. Despite its short length, the performance is a powerful display of the performing arts.
