In these eight stories, Joyce Carol Oates, unparalleled as an investigator into the intricacies of human failing, deftly tests the bonds between damaged individuals—a brother and sister, a teacher and student, two strangers on a subway—in the fearless prose for which she is justly celebrated. In the title story, a white aspiring professor is convinced she is being followed. No need to panic—she has a handgun stowed away in her purse, just in case. But when she turns to confront her black male shadow, the situation isn’t what she expects. In “The Rescuer,” a promising graduate student detours to inner-city Trenton, New Jersey, to save her brother from a downward spiral. But she soon finds out there may be more to his world than to hers. And in “The Last Man of Letters,” the world-renowned author X embarks on a final grand tour of Europe. He has money, fame, but not a whole lot of manners. A little thing like etiquette couldn’t bring a man like X down, could it? In these biting and beautiful pieces, Oates confronts, one by one, the demons within us, demonstrating that sometimes, it’s not the human side that wins out.Contents:“The Home at Craigmillnar” read by Ray Chase“High” read by Donna Postel“Toad-Baby” read by Luci Christian“Demon” read by Chris Patton“Lorelei” read by Tamara Marston“The Rescuer” read by Julia Whelan“The Last Man of Letters” ready by Ray Chase“High Crime Area” read by Julia Whelan

Short stories have always been a sort of instant access into an author’s brain, their soul and heart. A few pages can lift our lives into locations, people and experiences with a sweep of landscape, narration, feelings and emotions that is difficult to achieve elsewhere.

In this series we try to offer up tried and trusted ‘Top Tens’ across many different themes and authors. But any anthology will immediately throw up the questions – Why that story? Why that author?

The theme itself will form the boundaries for our stories which range from well-known classics, newly told, to stories that modern times have overlooked but perfectly exemplify the theme. Throughout the volume our authors whether of instant recognition or new to you are all leviathans of literature.

Some you may disagree with but they will get you thinking; about our choices and about those you would have made. If this volume takes you on a path to discover more of these miniature masterpieces then we have all gained something.

In this volume words sparkle and dance with a verve and purpose that other literary talents quite simple do not possess. Known principally for their novels the short story in their hands is fresh, compelling; a world of wonders. Genius is written with their names.

Calcutta is the central character in each of the three stories in this book. As all Bengalis will tell you, even when the city stands quietly in the corner, not saying a word, her presence may be deeply felt by those close to her. The House and Other Stories is also about the many persons we encounter in the everyday. These are the people we pass by without a second thought. Who are these people? What stories lie locked up in each of them? Will they ever be told? Like magic, one question leads to another and soon, they no longer appear anonymous; they come alive. It is as if an entirely new world has been conjured before our eyes. And we are enchanted by the stories that have lain hidden from us for so long. Even if the stories emerge at times from the realm of the dead.

William Fryer Harvey (1885-1937) was an English writer of short stories, most notably in the mystery and horror genres.Born into a wealthy Quaker family in Yorkshire, he went to Balliol College, Oxford, and took a degree in medicine at Leeds. Ill health dogged him, however, and he devoted much of his recuperation to writing short stories. "The Clock" is an atmospheric tale of the supernatural where a young woman finds herself alone in an empty house, searching for a missing clock. When she finds it she realises that something is wrong.... terribly wrong... and that there must be someone or something else in the house... but what?
