Summary

The Alchemist is a comedy by English playwright Ben Jonson. First performed in 1610 by the King's Men, it is generally considered Jonson's best and most characteristic comedy; Samuel Taylor Coleridge claimed that it had one of the three most perfect plots in literature. The play's clever fulfillment of the classical unities and vivid depiction of human folly have made it one of the few Renaissance plays (except the works of Shakespeare) with a continuing life on stage (except for a period of neglect during the Victorian era).

    The Adventures of Maya the Bee is a German book written by Waldemar Bonsels and published in 1912. The book has been published in many other languages and adapted into different media. The first American edition was published in 1922 by Thomas Seltzer and illustrated by Homer Boss. The latter's wife Adele Szold-Seltzer (1876-1940), the daughter of Benjamin Szold and younger sister of Henrietta Szold, was the translator.
The stories revolve around a little bee named Maya and her friends Willy the bee, Flip the grasshopper (referred to as Maja, Willi and Philip respectively in some versions), Miss Cassandra (Maya's teacher), and many other insects and other creatures. The book depicts Maya's development from an adventurous youngster to a responsible adult member of bee society.

    Ernst Benjamin Salomo Raupach was born on 21st May 1784 at Straupitz in Silesia, a son of the village pastor.  
 
After attending the gymnasium at Liegnitz, he studied theology at the university of Halle.  This led to a tutorship in St Petersburg in 1804 and occasionally some preaching in the German Lutheran church.  He was also hard at work writing his first dramatic tragedies and in 1817 he gained a professorship in German literature and history. 
 
In 1822, after anti-German outbreaks in Russia, he left for Italy and thence to Berlin, where he would remain for the rest of his life.  In his career he wrote some 80 plays and other works which greatly influenced life and Culture in the Prussian capital across tragedies, comedies and historical dramas.  
 
His seminal early prose vampire story ‘Wake Not the Dead’ was originally published in 1823 in Minerva Magazine.  When translated into English it was for many decades wrongly attributed to Johann Ludwig Tieck. 
 
Ernst Raupach died in Berlin on 18th March 1852.   He was 67.
