Summary

This richly illustrated book plunges you into the vibrant and provocative world of graffiti and street art in this wide-ranging exploration of a much-misunderstood culture. Our journey spans the tumultuous birth of graffiti in 1970s New York, to its explosive growth and evolution. Be seduced by the visceral impact of the bright colours and intricate shapes, the hard-hitting social and political commentary, and the stories that spontaneously spring from our urban canvases. This book encapsulates the raw energy, innovation and indomitable spirit of artists who dare to make the city their canvas. Join us on this journey, and see the urban world through a whole new lens.

An interdisciplinary engagement with the forest and its monsters through critical readings of folklore, fiction, film, music video and animation.

Within the text there are a multitude of convergent critical perspectives used to engage and explore fictional and real monsters of the forest in media and folklore. The collection features chapters from a variety of academic perspectives: film and media studies, cultural studies, queer theory, Tolkien studies, mythology and popular music are featured. Under examination are a wide range of narratives and media forms that represent, reimagine and create the werewolves, witches and weird apparitions that inhabit the forest, along with the forest as a monstrous entity in itself.

Whether they be our shelter and safe-haven or the domain of malevolent spirits and sprites, forests have the capacity to horrify and threaten those that venture into them without permission. Human interference has continually threatened forests across the world, yet this threat is reversed in myth, folklore and more recent cultural forms. This collection ranges widely to analyze how forests figure in contemporary culture, as well as the wider contexts in which such representations are inserted.

William Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice was probably written between 1596 and 1598, and was printed with the comedies in the First Folio of 1623. Bassanio, an impoverished gentleman, uses the credit of his friend, the merchant Antonio, to borrow money from a wealthy Jew, Shylock. Antonio pledges to pay Shylock a pound of flesh if he defaults on the loan, which Bassanio will use to woo a rich heiress, Portia. A subplot concerns the elopement of Shylock's daughter Jessica with a Christian, Bassanio's friend Lorenzo. In its focus on love and marriage, the play shares certain concerns with Shakespeare's other comedies. Yet its depiction of the tensions between Jews and Christians in early modern Venice - and its highly dramatic trial scene in Act 4 - create darker currents in the play. Hollywood is indelibly printed in our minds as the ‘go-to’ place for entertainment and has been for decades. When there really did seem to be more stars in Hollywood than in Heaven Hollywood Stage had them performing films as radio plays – on the sponsors dime of course. Classic films now become audiobooks with many featuring the original stars from way back when. Here's The Sidewalks of London starring Charles Laughton & Elsa Lanchester.
