Summary

Nuala Peadar, the beautiful owner of Seanagloree farm, has reconnected with her reclusive neighbor, Donal Jer, only to have him propose marriage to her twice in as many days. The first time, she refuses politely, the second time hotly, declaring she will have no man wedding her out of pity. However, after seeing the prodigious amount of work he has done on his farm, Eagle’s Ledge, she agrees to enter into partnership with him so that each can assist the other in the working of their lands.
Their relationship intensifies after she discovers him severely injured by his valuable but treacherous bull. Nuala first secures the animal at considerable risk to herself, then rides for help. She remains with Donal, first as nurse, then as an aide. As the weeks go by and they continue to work closely together, they both recognize the feeling that has grown between them, but it seems doomed to wither unfulfilled. Shadows, old and new, loom over the man, and the irresponsibility of Nuala’s brother brings tragedy to their closest friends. Can they breach these barriers and win through to the life they long to build together?

The lovely Sacha Waverley, the daughter of an impoverished country Vicar, who is a brilliant Greek scholar, is almost as beautiful if in a very demure way as her cousin, Lady Deirdre Lang, who is much more sophisticated and worldly.
So when Deirdre visits her at the Vicarage with a very strange request, Sacha finds herself perplexed by her domineering and demanding cousin.
For Deidre has fallen in love with Lord Gerrard and is desperate to join him at his house party. The trouble is that she is already secretly engaged to the Duke of Silchester as she longs to be a Duchess and he is very rich and influential.
Worse still the Duke has been injured in a terrible accident in a gun trap that has left him temporarily blind. And it is clearly Deirdre's duty to go to him at his Scottish Castle to comfort and cheer him up as he has requested her to do.
Instead Deirdre persuades Sacha to take her place as they are so alike and, although terrified of being exposed as an imposter, she is warmly greeted when she arrives in Scotland as Deidre and does so with aplomb.
Inspired by her beautiful surroundings of lochs and moorlands she heartens the ailing but handsome Duke and soon she is in love. And he with her.
But she is filled with dread of the moment that he regains his sight and can see that she is not who she claims to be!

Waif-like and half-starved the beautiful eighteen-year-old Tara has no second name and no family.
Orphaned when her mother died tragically in a carriage crash, she was raised in the appalling 'Orphanage of the Nameless' in London and has no knowledge at all of the world outside.
The drunken Matron of the Orphanage, Mrs. Barrowfield, relies on Tara to control, feed and look after the many orphans while she spends most of the money intended for their food on drink.
Then one day Mr. Falkirk comes to inform her that the Orphanage's owner and patron, the Duke of Arkcraig, has ordered her to Scotland to work in Castle Arkcraig.
Arriving, timid and overawed to meet her new Master, she is appalled to find that she has been seriously misled.
She is there not to work as a servant but to become the imperiously handsome Duke's bride – willing or not!
All of a sudden she is embroiled in the terrible enmity between the McCraig Clan and the equally warlike Kildonnons and the curse that hangs over them like a black cloud.
Worst of all, she finds that she has lost her heart to the husband for whom she had never asked and yet who now seems to be cold and aloof.
Has she been rescued from poverty and the horrors of the Orphanage and brought to the Duke's majestic Castle only to spend a lifetime starved of love?
