Summary

Nicholas does not live an ordinary life. He is a thief, reputed to be the best in London. But no one—no one—has ever broken into Westminster Palace except Nicholas, of course, who’s visited every few nights for months and months in order to steal—not crown jewels, nor secrets—but stories. The crown princess spins yarns in a tower study and Nicholas sits atop the roof to listen through the chimney flute until one night, when things go wrong and Nicholas finds himself in the palace and knowing things he should not know.
Someone loathes the idea that the King of England is planning to step down for his female heir, and will go to horrendous lengths to ensure this does not occur.
Suddenly, Nicholas wants to do the exact opposite of the thief’s code: helping to save a princess, instead of stealing one. A thief with a moral compass. Who knew?

It is the late twenty-first century, and Momo is the most celebrated dermal care technician in all of T City. Humanity has migrated to domes at the bottom of the sea to escape devastating climate change. The world is dominated by powerful media conglomerates and runs on exploited cyborg labor. Momo prefers to keep to herself, and anyway she’s too busy for other relationships: her clients include some of the city’s best-known media personalities. But after meeting her estranged mother, she begins to explore her true identity, a journey that leads to questioning the bounds of gender, memory, self, and reality.First published in Taiwan in 1995, The Membranes is a classic of queer speculative fiction in Chinese. Chi Ta-wei weaves dystopian tropes—heirloom animals, radiation-proof combat drones, sinister surveillance technologies—into a sensitive portrait of one young woman’s quest for self-understanding. Predicting everything from fitness tracking to social media saturation, this visionary and sublime novel stands out for its queer and trans themes. The Membranes reveals the diversity and originality of contemporary speculative fiction in Chinese, exploring gender and sexuality, technological domination, and regimes of capital, all while applying an unflinching self-reflexivity to the reader’s own role. Ari Larissa Heinrich’s translation brings Chi’s hybrid punk sensibility to all readers interested in books that test the limits of where speculative fiction can go.

Imagine a world where everyone is the same. Ordinary people look and behave just like celebrities and influencers. The lower class shares the same privileges and consequences as the upper class. There is no separation among people and no isolation among cliques. No conflicts. No competition. No envy. A world where there is complete freedom to do anything and everything without consequences. A world where morality is forbidden and driven by unspoken rules of commonality. Imagine a world where differences and personalities become extinct. Imagine a world where conscience and emotions create destruction and death.

Paris, 1930. Monsieur D'Haricot is a secret agent with a twitchy moustache.

Out of sight and mind, a community of refugees has been forced beneath the catacombs by centuries of persecution. They have built their own city, a replica of Paris, and developed advanced technologies and transport systems. With post-WWI Europe in turmoil, now is the time for them to resurface.
Monsieur D'Haricot has no problem with this, but a planned invasion is a different story altogether. He is, after all, duty-bound to protect France.

Faced with mistaken identities, split personalities, trickery, lies, downright lies, and repugnant bicycles, he will need to engage his complete repertoire of guile and espionage training to prevail. If that fails, well, at least he can rely on a little help from his friends: a sweet-toothed crab and an angel puppeteer.

The time is right for revolution, but the clock is not.
