Summary

Five months after traveling to a post-apocalyptic future where collectives reign supreme and individuals have been hunted to the verge of extinction, Maggie Harper was returned to her own time until the threat to her life could be neutralized. She thought Marcus and the others would return for her within a few weeks, and now she’s beginning to worry.

When travelers from the future finally show up to collect her, it’s not who she expected. With the return of her memories, she wants more than ever to see Marcus again, but a snake-like woman whose abilities are a perfect match for Maggie’s, an injured Traveler, and decades of civil unrest to wade through all stand in the way of their reunion.

Meanwhile, Marcus and Karl traipse through the countryside, trying to neutralize Colin, who’s promised to brutalize and murder Maggie if he can get his hands on her. When a collective woman is left for dead, Marcus heals her, hoping she’ll be the key to killing Colin and bringing Maggie back. But she may prove as much a hindrance as a help.

The team struggles to get their bearings, but things happen faster than they know. The collectives are coalescing, power is shifting, and the one called B is putting sinister plans into action. If the team can’t reunite and get a handle on the situation, their freedom and individuality—perhaps their very identity—will be ripped away before they can catch their breath.

I had always known moving to Eilé would be dangerous, and that I might die some strange, unnatural death. Mostly, I imagined eventually being hunted down by Mikael and Moira for another game of sacrifice the Lorehnin girl. Who would have thought I’d go out like this? A living, breathing lightning rod, calmly accepting my fate like some maiden meekly submitting to her martyrdom. I almost snorted. I guess I could start kicking and screaming if I wanted to. Then again, it might be nice to die with some dignity intact.

A few scant months ago Robyn Dunbarre, with the help of Devlin O’Brolaigh, managed to escape the claws of a sadistic Otherworldly mage with her life barely intact. Now living in Eilé, Robyn is eager to track down her Lorehnin roots. Devlin believes they should start searching among the Amsíhría, the women of the Otherworld with the power to appease Eilé’s wild, and sometimes volatile, weather.

On their journey to the Amsíhr Mountains, Robyn and Devlin visit Luathara Castle. The time spent with Meghan and Cade is meant to be a calm and relaxing break from their recent trouble in the mortal world, but Robyn soon learns that not all has been peaceful in Eilé either, and that the stubborn well of her own Lorehnin magic is finally ready to leave its mark on the Otherworld.

She is introduced to the lavish world of Versailles, and encounters outfits and opulence beyond what she ever dreamed. With never ending feasts and parties and concerts, Versailles is a world of its own. She is happily reunited with her bother Sam, who is also back in time, and having dreams of their father, too. But all is not as well as it seems. Kyle has traveled back in time, too—this time, with his evil sidekick, Sergei—and he is more determined than ever to kill Caitlin. And Sam and Polly each fall ever deeper into toxic relationships, which just might threaten to destroy everything around them. As Caitlin becomes a true and hardened warrior, she comes closer than ever to finding her father, and the mythical Shield.
