Summary

Practically overnight, shape-shifting creatures and deadly portals have appeared, made possible by an otherworldly energy that exists not buried in deep pockets underground, but deep inside two children, Roan and Judge Gorey.
It’s a real shame they don’t get along.
To Judge, his sister is a selfish hack who deserves some payback. Roan thinks Judge is nothing more than a mistake that needs erasing. The rest of the world is caught in the crossfire.
Dimond Industries claims a cure to their condition, but at what price? Possession requires containment, and the answer to the mysterious origin of the Gorey children must be found—or constructed. Are the children a product of Nature, or a side effect of experiment?
Will Roan and Judge destroy the world before being given the chance to save it?

Nine stories travel through time and space to share insights into the human—and not so human—experience inthis gripping science fiction anthology from respected author and critic Algis Budrys   Through stories of humans mistaken for gods and assimilation into an android society, this stunning collection illustrates our inability to understand and communicate with one another.   In “Silent Brother,” the spaceship Endeavor returns to Albuquerque, New Mexico, from the five-planet solar system of Alpha Centaurus; in an unprecedented move, the UN forbids interviews with the returning astronauts or any examination of the starship, but one man—wheelchair-bound Harvey Cable—thinks he knows the nature of a strange disease that may be spreading. In “Between the Dark and the Daylight,” people trapped under a dome in the aftermath of an expedition that crashes on an unlivable planet find a terrifying way to fight back. “The Man Who Tasted Ashes” is a longtime assassin who meddles in human history; his latest assignment will set off World War III. And nothing is what it seems in a story where a doctor visits a man blinded in an accident. Other tales are populated by humanoids, mutants, parasitic aliens, and a girl with a special gift, who is rejected by others of her kind.

Before many of the current genres were cemented, Edgar Rice Burroughs began putting out a seemingly endless blur of sci-fi/fantasy/pulp fiction books, starting with A Princess of Mars. The third installment in his Martian - or Barsoom - series is The Warlord of Mars, featuring John Carter: ex-Civil War vet who's full of heroic, non-PC, early 20th century manliness. Carter's beloved Dejah is imprisoned in the Temple of the Sun, and he's had to wait an entire Barsoomian year for the entrance to her prison to be exposed.
John Carter and Hekkador Matai Shang set out to rescue Holy Thern's daughter who is imprisoned with Dejah Thoris and Thuvia. John Carter is beset on all sides as he attempts to free the three hotties and to reunite with his wife. Follow the adventure as Carter chases his foes into the uncharted north pole region where he'll discover new and fantastic alien races. There's action and adventure on every page, as John Carter is faced with new opponents to battle relentlessly. Burroughs uses language from a century ago, but don't let it slow you down - it's charming and fun after a chapter or two. This series is bound to captivate all audiences, as Burroughs dishes out heaps of good clean action - but it's a perfect entree into sci-fi for younger boys. They'll want to read the whole collection before the film John Carter of Mars comes out in 2012.

Zoe is desperate to become the woman she sees in others' memories, while Dani struggles to conceal damaging secrets, risking losing herself--her humanity--completely. Together, they must rediscover the true meaning of friendship, love, and trust, and learn just how hard they're willing to fight for what remains of their shattered world.

As time passes, Brooke is subjected to various tests, and it isn’t until she comes face to face with the new Coven leader that she finds out why Gianna had gone after her back in Scottsdale in the first place. The former vampire queen’s plans force the Pack to search for answers, but they only uncover a complex web of deception expertly woven by Gianna and her coven.
