Summary

THE IDEALS OF A NATION.
Five hundred and fifty years before the war against Thrakoth, the land of Fiea is in chaos. Years of civil unrest have forced the burgeoning colonies into a state of open rebellion against their overlords in the Avelingian Empire. While the public remains bitterly divided, the Avelingian government initiates a crackdown on the growing desire for civil liberties, culminating in the arrest and impending execution of Amelhir Vilistani.
The sudden condemnation of the beloved scientist inflames the growing resistance to Imperial rule. In the city of Olmonin, rebel politicians gather in a secret assembly to keep the growing conflict from spiraling out of control. Yet as the clock ticks down to Amelhir's doom, the resistance will soon find that the only way to save their people will be to set off a chain of events that lead to the sundering of an empire… and the rise of a new republic.

    Jennet's back. No one's safe.
A skeleton is dug up at the crossing of the ways on Hanging Moor, striking dread into the heart of Old Ma Ramsgill - the elderly matriarch of the village of Thruscross. And with good reason. The eighteenth-century witch, Jennet, has been woken.
A spate of killings by a vicious black dog gives credence to her warnings and the community - in particular her family - realise they are in terrible danger.
Drastic measures are needed to contain her, but with the imminent flooding of the valley to create a new reservoir, do they have the ability to stop her and break her curse?

Short stories have always been a sort of instant access into an author’s brain, their soul and heart. A few pages can lift our lives into locations, people and experiences with a sweep of landscape, narration, feelings and emotions that is difficult to achieve elsewhere.

In this series we try to offer up tried and trusted ‘Top Tens’ across many different themes and authors. But any anthology will immediately throw up the questions – Why that story? Why that author?

The theme itself will form the boundaries for our stories which range from well-known classics, newly told, to stories that modern times have overlooked but perfectly exemplify the theme. Throughout the volume our authors whether of instant recognition or new to you are all leviathans of literature.

Some you may disagree with but they will get you thinking; about our choices and about those you would have made. If this volume takes you on a path to discover more of these miniature masterpieces then we have all gained something.

In this volume we enjoy a favourite device of authors; the story is heading one way and suddenly twists in another direction entirely. In the pens of Ambrose Bierce, Nikolai Gogol, Saki and a host of others where you end up is the very question they propose.

turmoil of the world we cannot avoid, but the disturbances of mind we can overcome. The duties and difficulties of life claim our attention, but we can rise above all anxiety concerning them. Surrounded by noise, we can yet have a quiet mind; involved in responsibilities, the heart can be at rest; in the midst of strife, we can know the abiding peace. The twenty pieces which comprise this book, unrelated as some of them are in the letter, will be found to be harmonious in the spirit, in that they point the reader towards those heights of self-knowledge and self-conquest which, rising above the turbulence of the world, lift their peaks where the Heavenly Silence reigns

From C. J. Box, the New York Times -bestselling author of the Joe Pickett novels, comes a thrilling book of suspense stories about the Wyoming he knows so well-- and the dark deeds and impulses that can be found there. Over the course of eighteen books, C. J. Box has been consistently hailed for his brilliant storytelling and extraordinary skills at creating character, suspense, and a deep sense of place. All of those strengths are in the ten riveting stories-- three of them never before published-- that make up Shots Fired. In " One-Car Bridge," one of four Joe Pickett stories, Pickett goes up against a " just plain mean" landowner, with disastrous results, and in " Shots Fired," his investigation into the radio call referred to in the title nearly ends up being the last thing he ever does. In " Pirates of Yellowstone," two Eastern European tough guys find out what it means to be strangers in a strange land, and in " Le Sauvage Noble," the stranger is a Lakota in Paris who enjoys playing the " noble savage" for the French women-- until he meets Sophie. Then he discovers what " savage" really means.
