  La teoría de los espines, concebida por Julio Calvo hace unos veinte años, y aplicada desde el primer momento a la Morfología y a la Semántica, alcanza en este libro su desarrollo más completo, adquiriendo en conjunto la categoría de una nueva fundación de la Semántica desde principios cognitivos y perceptivos. Julio Calvo considera que los principales recursos de la Semántica (polisemia, sinonimia, antonimia, holonimia... y por supuesto la metáfora) se unifican en un fenómeno único, el cual permite predecir la lexicogénesis de las lenguas. Basados en este principio creador y regulador del léxico, que sin duda alguna es un universal de la Semántica, los diccionarios pueden ser tratados como entidades que albergan entradas con la capacidad de estructurar todas las acepciones de que constan a partir de diferencias mínimas de oposición interna, o bien de adición mínima sobre un todo sémico previo, que jerarquizan adecuadamente el proceso. Para demostrarlo, Julio Calvo aporta 200 ejemplos seleccionados, sobre millones posibles, en que la teoría se manifiesta con absoluta nitidez.
