Summary

Polisievrou Erica van der Linde het die perfekte manier gevind om te verseker dat getuies onder haar bewaring in die getuiebeskermingsprogram in Kaapstad versteek bly. In plaas daarvan om hulle die beloofde nuwe identiteit, die skoon begin en nuwe lewe op ’n nuwe plek te gee, vermoor sy hulle bloot. Vir ’n tyd lank lyk dit na die perfekte plan: Dit spaar haar tyd, moeite en geld en verlos die wêreld van boosdoeners, een op ’n slag. En wie gaan dié versteekte staatsgetuies, tog in elk geval voormalige kriminele, mis? Gaan enigeen hulle soek? Maar dan kry sy opdrag om Daniël Enslin te versteek, en so ’n getuie het sy nog nooit teëgekom nie. 
Daniël bewoon, veral danksy die ongure, gewetenlose maar paranoïese Frank, ’n donkerder deel van Kaapstad as enigeen in die stadsbeplanningskantoor waar hy werk. Frank Redelinghuys en sy kriminele aktiwiteite bied Daniël iets om die verveling van sy saai alleenloperbestaan teen te werk. Dit begin, soos alle dinge, klein, en, soos dikwels, met ’n geheimsinnige pakkie. Kort voor lank het Frank ’n geweldige houvas op Daniël. Maar die aand wanneer Daniël sien hoe Frank ’n prostituut vermoor, begin sy gewete aan hom knaag. Wanneer die koerante daaroor berig, begin hy verder te twyfel. 
Wat sal gebeur as Daniël sy vriend aan die polisie probeer uitlewer? En het Acker Frank, ervare speurder wat hy is, wat dit vat om Frank te uitoorlê? Wanneer Daniël Acker kontak is Acker buite homself van opwinding, want hier is die goue kans waarvoor hy al lankal wag. Maar hy is dadelik op sy hoede, en skielik besef Daniël dat hy hom in veel groter gevaar begewe as wat hy ooit verwag het. Ná Daniël se wenk, trek Acker Frank vas, maar wanneer Frank se trawante Daniël byna noodlottig aanrand, blyk dit dat Frank die speurder steeds ’n paar treë vooruit is. Hulle probeer om Frank te laat glo dat hy daarin geslaag het om Daniël om die lewe te laat bring, maar wanneer hy agterkom dat hy wel nog lewe, is Frank vasberade: Die man moet dood. Niemand kom daarmee weg om Frank Redelinghuys in die rug te steek nie. Daar is geen manier dat Daniël na sy lewe kan terugkeer nie, want dan is hy so goed as dood. Dis wanneer Acker die getuiebeskermingsprogram voorstel. Dit lyk na Daniël se enigste opsie. 
Hardekwas, bekwaam, prikkelbaar en geheimsinnig. Erica van der Linde is die dogter van ’n speurder, en ’n poliesievrou met, so lyk dit, ’n rekord van eenhonderd persent sukses. Erica neem vir Daniël na ’n afgeleë plaas waar sy vir hulle ’n afgesonderde kothuis gehuur het. Hier sal sy kwansuis vir Daniël in ’n ander mens, met ’n nuwe identiteit, omskep. Hulle stamp koppe. Daniël het lastige vrae. En hy’s anders. Nie so haatlik soos die ander nie. Nie jou uitgeknipte krimineel nie. Maar dan kom die dag van teregstelling, soos Erica dit verkies, en dinge loop vir haar skeef. In plaas daarvan dat sy hom verras, en haar skoot hom sekuur tref, daar tussen die rotse en die niet waarheen sy hom gelei het, kry hy dit reg om te ontsnap. Erica vat die trekpas terug na die kothuis toe, waar sy Daniël inwag, omdat sy weet hy sal móét terugkeer: na kos en water, en die enigste skuiling wat hy het. Daar sal sy hom inwag en die taak afhandel. En skielik is dit vir haar ook ’n taak van lewe en dood, want nou ken Daniël haar geheim, en Daniël kan maklik, baie maklik, haar kollega Acker laat weet . . .
