From the time he set up his first studio at the tender age of sixteen, Sir Anthony Van Dyck (1599-1641) was a legend in the art world. Rubens, whom he studied with as a child, said that he was his most talented pupil, and he went on to spectacularly fulfill this promise with a career as a celebrated court painter in England and Spain. Historians, scholars, and art lovers alike continue to recognize the sophistication and timeless beauty of his works. From the Pulitzer Prize winning author of Crimes of the Heart comes this poignant but unromanticized story of the hard lives of pioneers on the high plains of Wyoming in the 1860's. Macon and Bess are two mail-order brides, lured to the West by the promise of new beginnings through marriage to men they’ve never met. While waiting for their respective husbands-to-be, one bubbling with optimism, the other mousy and plain, the two women become instant best friends. As Abundance follows the two women through their friendship and adventures for the next 25 years, this Western epic unearths the dark underside of American mythology. An L.A. Theatre Works full-cast performance featuring Ed Begley Jr., Gary Cole, Amy Madigan, Steven Weber and JoBeth Williams.

A railway history expert “vividly portrays a way of life no longer seen. A fascinating insight into historical American railroading” (Railways Illustrated).   In this visually stunning and comprehensive photographic essay, railroad historian and photographer Donovan L. Hofsommer records the end of branchline passenger service, the demise of electric railroads, the transition from steam to diesel power, as well as the end of common carrier freight service on the Colorado narrow gauge. Off the MainLines carries readers along out-of-the-way railways in Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, Colorado, Oklahoma, Texas, Montana, and South Dakota to see the changes that occurred on these lines from the 1940s to the 1990s. “If you miss the Milwaukee, recall the Rock Island, suffer from the loss of the Soo Line, maintain sadness for the Santa Fe, can’t forget the Frisco, absent-mindedly buried the Burlington Route in oblivion or still maintain romantic recollections of the Katy, you’ll find Dr. Hofsommer’s Off the Main Lines exactly where you need to be!”—Lexington Quarterly “A fitting tribute to its subject; railroad enthusiasts across the upper Midwest and beyond will find Hofsommer’s personalized history to be both edifying and immensely rewarding.”—The Annals of Iowa “An interesting blend of historical fact and personal reminiscence, and traces the author’s own personal 60-year rail odyssey to a variety of ‘off the beaten path’ locations.”—Michigan Railfan “All in all this is a good photographic essay of some lesser known routes and, as usual, I picked up a few more pieces of information to use at a railroad trivia night.”—The Villager

Get this and get it straight, crime is a sucker's road and those who travel it wind up in the gutter, the prison or the grave. There’s no other end but they never learn. This time a nervous breakdown and a driving rain, a cape with a high collar and a tiny sliver of glass led me from the ballet and a beautiful dancer to the edge of a cliff and death.

Get on the express for improvisation. Know how to improvise and think fast on your feet.

Have you ever found yourself being put on the spot talking to somebody unexpectedly or being placed in the spotlight giving an impromptu speech to random people where you have idea what to say? What about finding yourself in some kind of either trouble needing to sweet talk or emergency needing to react properly to get your way out of it?

In situations like these, what's the most important thing you have to be able to do? You have to think fast! And think fast on your feet to come up with the right response and reaction.

We all want to say the right things at the right time, every time, to get the best ideal outcome like in the movies but, reality check, this is real life where we are not bound by polished scripts with plenty of retakes.

The good news, however, you can hone your quick-thinking ability to do so through improvisation, or improv.

Improv is a form of acting from the theater that can help anybody think faster because it's rooted entirely on performers acting without a script while being on their toes and in the moment to make the scene as interesting and effective as possible. That's what improv can do!

So let's borrow improv from the theater to help you in the real world. This relates mostly to conversation, but the skill itself can be applied for whenever you need quick mental reflexes and fast thinking.

By taking the Improvisation Express, your destination includes:

How to increase your mental energy and creativity flow with improv games to think faster on your feet.
How to use a simple formula to keep conversation going and make active choices for engaging interaction.
How to be in the moment and adventurous so you never have to be stale and stuck on what to say or do next.

As the 1950s dawned America was a colossus militarily, economically and culturally. It bestrode a globe it was doing so much to shape in its own image. But it had concerns; the threat of communism. And for the Movies and Radio there was another concern: the emerging rise of Television.

For Radio, still in its golden age of mass audiences and star filled programmes, they had a handy solution with ‘The Big Show’. Its premise was simple but effective. Take 90 minutes of air-time and fill it with the stars of stage, screen and radio doing comedy sketches, drama extracts and musical numbers.

It sounds simple enough and aided by a huge budget from NBC it was a success, staffed by the best writers and technical team in the business.

Hosted by Tallulah Bankhead, with her sharp and acidic wit and her brilliance at ad-libbing ‘The Big Show’ was big entertainment with big stars for a big audience.
