From “the adventure ambassadors our current generation of cotton-wood kids urgently need,” an outdoor activity guide to keep kids happy and healthy (Daily Telegraph).

Adventure is out there—you just have to go and find it!

Childhood obesity is increasing year on year. Happiness and well-being levels in children are on the decline too. Children spend less time outside and more time in front of screens: computers, phones, games, television.

100 Family Adventures provides a valuable resource bank of tried and tested outdoor activities to enjoy with children, swapping “screen time” for “green time.” Particularly inspiring for people who want to get started, but don’t know how, the book shows how any family can enjoy time together outdoors.

Activities are grouped into themes: Woodland, Water, Close to Home, Hills and Mountains, Exploring, By the Sea, Extreme Weather. Within each section is a range in difficulty, from making a rope swing to scrambling up a stream, from spending a day without electricity to going on a charity bike ride, from exploring a rockpool to camping on an uninhabited island.

Packed with inspiring photos, sensible but enthusiastic instructions from parents Tim and Kerry combine with remarks and advice (and jokes!) from children Amy and Ella.

"The White Heart of the Mojave" recounts a 1920's adventure "in the wind and sun and big spaces" of Death Valley by two independent minded women, Edna Brush Perkins and Charlotte Hannahs Jordan. Both women were early feminists, Edna as chairwoman of the greater Cleveland Woman's Suffrage Party (1916-18). At the end of the Great War, the two friends wanted nothing more than to escape "to the solitariness of some wild and lonely place far from city halls, smokestacks, national organizations, and streets of little houses all alike." Their vacation started as a long motor drive through the backwoods of California (Charlotte's husband, Ned, owned the Jordan Motor Car Company). It ended with a month long trek through Death Valley in an old milk wagon drawn by a horse and a mule. Edna's descriptions of the desert are superb and from the heart--the dunes "were very beautiful, with knife-edged tops ridged in pure, clean lines from which fringes of fine sand blew up like the wind tossed manes of white horses." This is a great listen for anyone who likes first-hand accounts of adventure in the Great Outdoors. (Summary by Sue Anderson)

Learn how to knit a sweater that compliments your body type with this guide and pattern collection, from the author of Knit Wear Love.

Knit to Flatter is about celebrating the body you have been given and creating sweaters that make you look and feel great. Part instruction manual and part pattern collection, Knit to Flatter teaches you how to assess your shape?top-heavy, bottom-heavy, or proportional? and then knit accordingly. With a great sense of fun and acceptance, Amy Herzog presents silhouettes and styles that work with each body shape, along with four ideal sweater patterns per category. She then provides patterns for ten more sweaters with guidelines for customizing, so they can be tailored to flatter. Each pattern is written in up to 10 sizes, and the garments are photographed on models with genuine curves. No smoke and mirrors here. Just real beauty!

    Praise for Knit to Flatter

“You pick a pattern and buy some yarn. One hundred and fifty dollars and forty hours later, you try on your freshly knitted sweater and . . . oh no. You vow to take up scrapbooking. Which is why we need Knit to Flatter. Kudos to the author and the production team for including models of diverse colors, shapes and sizes, creating a look book to which we can all relate.” ?Vogue Knitting
