L'auteur, Z.T. Fomum apporte une réponse aux nombreuses interrogations que se posent souvent les chrétiens, concernant soit leur propre progrès spirituel, soit le progrès spirituel des autres croyants. 
Ces interrogations se résument comme suit:comment vaincre la tendance à l'activisme qui rend les croyants agités, incapables de pouvoir s'accorder du calme devant Dieu afin de le chercher?Comment faire pour connaitre Dieu afin de pouvoir le servir à partir d'une connaissance profonde ?En un mot, comment faire pour marcher de progrès en progrès dans notre génération? 
L'auteur nous invite, en guise de réponse à ces nombreuses questions, à expérimenter une vie de retraites spirituelles, prélude à la grande retraite finale que le Seigneur prendra bientôt avec son église. Aussi la retraite est-elle présentée comme un signe de l'amour pour le Seigneur. 
Pour résoudre des questions relatives à la préparation et à la planification d'une retraite, l'auteur suggère à titre indicatif, une série de programmes de retraites allant de 15minutes à plusieurs heures et plusieurs jours. 
Ce livre est un instrument de réveil.
