Summary

In "The Story of the Malakand Field Force," Winston Churchill presents a compelling narrative of the 1897 Northwest Frontier campaign, an engagement marked by its complex interplay of military strategy, geopolitics, and imperial ambition. Written in Churchill's characteristic prose—rich, vivid, and deeply reflective—the book seamlessly combines personal memoir with rigorous historical analysis. The account not only details the logistics of the military operation but also paints a portrait of the cultural tensions that defined British-Indian relations at the time, enmeshing the reader in the vivid tapestry of colonial history. Winston Churchill, a soldier and later a statesman, had firsthand experience of the campaign, serving as a war correspondent during the conflict. His upbringing in British aristocracy, combined with his intrinsic understanding of the military and political landscape of the late 19th century, deeply influenced his perspective. Churchill's nuanced grasp of warfare and his passionate belief in the British Empire's mission imbue the narrative with urgency and gravitas, providing readers with insights that transcend mere facts. For those intrigued by military history, colonial studies, or the intricacies of 19th-century imperialism, "The Story of the Malakand Field Force" is essential reading. Churchill's eloquent prose and thoughtful analysis invite readers to ponder the moral implications of empire while gaining a deeper understanding of the human condition amidst the chaos of war.

In ancient Egypt, the underpinning concept in law, in theory, was that rich and poor citizens should be treated equally, but this was an aspiration that was rarely fulfilled in practice. At the same time, the types of treatment delivered to those deemed guilty could also be harsh - common punishments included confiscation of property, slavery, beatings, and mutilation. During both the Old Kingdom (c. 2700 BCE – 2200 BCE) and Middle Kingdom (c. 2030 BCE – 1650 BCE), crime was dealt with by local officials using their own private police forces. However, during the New Kingdom (c. 1539 BCE – 1075 BCE) a centralized police force emerged, consisting of Nubian tribesmen under an Egyptian supervisor, who were armed with staffs and used specially trained dogs.
In extreme cases, the death penalty was invoked, sometimes with the additional punishment of ensuring that the convicted were refused a burial or were buried but without full rituals. Based on the Egyptians’ religious beliefs, both situations resulted in the guilty being denied entry to the afterlife.
Perhaps not surprisingly, not all laws related directly to criminal activity. Civil disputes were common, and suits by a plaintiff against a defendant provide another major source about the Egyptian legal system, as do the copies of the many legal transactions and contracts that date from the 7th century BCE onwards when the popular form of the written language (Demotic) started to become more widely used. Indeed, it is often difficult to distinguish between civil and criminal cases in the available records. Following the introduction of writing, however, written deeds or contracts quickly replaced traditional oral agreements, and many of these extant documents reveal considerable detail about the laws of ancient Egypt.

The Last Kings of Macedonia and...

In the history of ancient Macedonia, the last three Antigonid kings—Philip V, his son Perseus, and the pretender Andriscus or Philip VI—are commonly overlooked in favor of their predecessors Philip II and his son Alexander the Great, who established a Macedonian empire. By the time Philip V became king, Macedonia was no longer an imperial power and Rome was fast spreading its dominance over the Mediterranean. Viewed as postscripts to the kingdom's heyday, the last Macedonian kings are often denounced for self-serving ambitions, flawed policies, and questionable personal qualities by hostile ancient writers. They are condemned for defeats by Rome that saw both the end of the monarchy and the fall of the formidable Macedonian phalanx before the Roman legion.

Producing the first full-scale treatment of Philip V in eighty years and the first in English of Perseus and Andriscus in more than fifty, Ian Worthington argues that this period was far from a postscript to Macedonia's Classical greatness and disagrees that the last Antigonid kings were merely collateral damage in Rome's ascendancy in the east. Despite superior Roman manpower and resources, Philip and Perseus often had the upper hand in their wars against Rome. As Worthington asserts, these kings deserve to be remembered for striving to preserve their kingdom's independence against staggering odds.

A gripping tale of resilience and survival that offers hope to others who have experienced family violence and suffered at the hands of a sibling.A deeply personal and heart-breaking memoir that explores the troubled relationship between Mary Garden and her younger sister, Anna, who died in 2023 after a short illness. Mary unpacks her life of growing up in New Zealand in the 1950s and ’60s, before making Australia home. She reveals complex layers of intergenerational trauma, including the baggage of her eccentric, deeply flawed father and the secret her mother kept from all of them, revealed only after her death. Mary deals movingly with her sister’s long battle with mental illness and how she once saved Anna’s life. As she unravels these narratives, Mary touches on the guilt and shame familiar to anyone who has had to deal with secrets, violence and ‘madness’ in their family. And she shines a light on sibling abuse, the most common form of abuse in the context of family violence ‒ occurring up to five times as frequently as spousal or parental child abuse ‒ although it is often dismissed as ‘sibling rivalry’. It causes far-reaching, long-lasting harm.
