    TURNING THE SHIP AROUND

Joe Ferreira specializes in spectacular turnarounds. However, none of Joe’s hard-won personal or professional successes prepared him for becoming the CEO of an organization the same week it was threatened with imminent dissolution by the United States government. Faced with a toxic legacy culture and the worst performance metrics in his industry, Joe drew upon his most momentous personal and professional life experiences—almost failing out of high school, captaining a boat through the treacherous currents of the Bermuda Triangle, letting go of micromanagement tendencies by delegating critical medical procedures—to keep a lifesaving enterprise from losing its federal certification.

A management memoir, the story of Uncomfortable Inclusion will intrigue, infuriate, and inspire leaders who are eager to turn their organizations into world leaders. As the title suggests, the book’s most engaging and enlightening takeaway is Joe’s ultimate commitment to uncomfortable inclusion, a management practice he proves is the single most important factor for success. Joe’s trials, tribulations, and ultimately sustainable triumphs as part of the journey of transforming a company from terrible to trailblazing offers encouragement to leaders on how to best invest in their company to achieve great results.

“The go-to guide on diversity. . . . A must-read book for [anyone] who wants to understand what it takes to respect and work with today’s global workforce.” —Brendon Burchard, #1 New York Times–bestselling author of High Performance Habits

A powerful diversity training tool from one of the most respected diversity trainers.

Even well-intended people can cause harm. Have you ever heard yourself or someone else say: “Some of my best friends are . . . (Black, White, Asian, etc.)”? “I don’t think of you as . . . (Gay, Disabled, Jewish, etc.)”? “I don’t see color, I’m colorblind”? These statements and dozens like them can build a divide between us and the people we interact with. Though well-intended, they often widen the diversity gap sometimes causing irreparable harm personally and professionally. If you’ve ever wanted to be more effective in your communication with others, or have been afraid of saying the wrong thing, then this concise guide is essential to becoming more inclusive and diversity-smart.

“Good intentions are not enough in this well written, down to earth, no blame, insightful book. If you ever found yourself unsure of what to say, then this book will provide you valuable tools to be more effective every day.” —Judith H. Katz, Ed. D. author of White Awareness: Handbook for Anti-racism Training

The China Price - The True Cost...

    Alexandra Harney

To write The China Price, Alexandra Harney has penetrated further and deeper into China's enormous ecosystem of export-oriented industry than any outsider before her to uncover the truth about how China is able to offer such amazingly low prices to the rest of the world. What she has discovered is a brutal, Hobbesian world in which intense pricing pressure from Western companies combines with ubiquitous corruption and a lack of transparency to exact an unseen and unconscionable toll in human misery and environmental damage. The recent scandals about Chinese-made toys, tires, and toothpaste drive home a central tenet of this book: What happens in Chinese factories affects all of us, everywhere. In a country with almost no transparency, where graft is institutionalized and workers have little recourse to the rule of law, incentives to lie about business practices vastly outweigh incentives to tell the truth. Harney reveals that despite a decade of monitoring factories, outsiders all too often have no idea of the conditions under which goods from China are made. She exposes the widespread practice of using a dummy or model factory as a company's false window out to the world, concealing a vast number of illegal factories operating completely off the books. Some Western companies are better than others about sniffing out such deception, but too many are perfectly happy to embrace plausible deniability as long as the prices remain so low. And in the Gold Rush atmosphere that has infected the country, in which everyone is clamoring to get rich and corruption is rampant, it's almost impossible for the Chinese government's own underfunded regulatory mechanisms to do much good at all.Perhaps the most important revelation in The China Price is how fast change is coming, one way or another. A generation of Chinese flocked from the rural interior of the country to its coastline, where the factory jobs are in the largest mass migration in human history; but that migration has slowed dramatically, in no small part because of widespread disenchantment with the way of life the factories offer. As pollution in China's industrial cities worsens and their infrastructure buckles, and as grassroots activism for more legal recourse grows, pressures are mounting on the system that will not dissipate without profound change. Managing the violence of that change is the greatest challenge China faces in the near future, and managing its impact on the world economy is the challenge that faces us all.
