Summary

W. H. Hudson’s trailblazing story of a pastoral utopia that harbors a dark secret After a landslide, Smith awakens groggy and confused. The landscape around him has changed dramatically. He wanders through the countryside, searching for any semblance of civilization, until a family takes him in. As he recounts what happened to him and where he came from, it dawns on Smith that he has somehow left his own world behind and awoken somewhere entirely new.   What Smith finds is a gorgeous utopian vision of a peaceful world made real. Humans live in accordance with nature, respectful of the land and animals, untethered by technology. The cause of this new order is an alternate hierarchy of humanity that Smith must learn to adhere to—or face the consequences.   As he integrates into this foreign society, Smith finds himself falling for the daughter of the house. But when he tries to tell her, he realizes the most important difference between his former world and his new one: Romantic love no longer exists.   This ebook has been professionally proofread to ensure accuracy and readability on all devices.

Mark Twain's brilliant tale of a train stuck on the prairie in a snowdrift, where the starving passengers resort to a daily ballot to select which fellow traveller will be sacrificed to provide the next meal. Will it be the succulent Mr. Harris of St. Louis, the juicy Mr. Messick of Colorado or the scraggy, tough Mr. Davis of Oregon? Twain's gentle gallows humour shines through the story and we find ourselves laughing out loud at the most grisly of details. Masterly!

The Veteran: A Stephen Crane StoryThe Veteran featured Henry Fleming as a grand father many years after he appeared as the 18 year old Yankee first time soldier in The Red Badge of Courage. He retells the story succinctly and honestly about how he ran from his first battle as so many did. His grandchild was alarmed as children are when they learn the adults are not perfect in what they do.Fleming exhibits bravery in the story as he saves his farm animals and lurches into his barn to save what he could, despite knowing the long odds against it. This story could well have been an Afterword to The Red Badge of Courage. The last paragraph is well worth the listening: "When the roof fell in (the barn), a great funnel of smoke swarmed toward the sky, as if the old man's (Fleming) spirit, released from its body-a little bottle-had swelled like the genie of fable. The smoke was tinted rose-hue from the flames, and perhaps the unutterable midnights of the universe will have no power to daunt the color of this soul."

Overdoing It by Anton Chekhov is a short story about a land surveyor who hires a peasant cart driver to take him to the estate he has been summoned to survey. The journey is long and tortuous, and the surveyor is jolted and marvelled at the capacity of the Russian drivers for combining a slow pace with a jolting that turns the soul inside out. The surveyor is worried about the danger of the journey, but the driver, Klim, reassures him that there are no robbers on the road. The surveyor even lies to Klim that he has three revolvers to protect himself. The journey becomes even more suspicious when the cart suddenly turns to the left, leaving the surveyor to wonder where Klim is taking him to. Read in English, unabridged.

When Daniel Blackland was six, he ingested his first bone fragment, a bit of kraken spine plucked out of the sand during a visit with his demanding, brilliant, and powerful magician father, Sebastian. When Daniel was twelve, he watched Sebastian die at the hands of the Hierarch of Southern California, devoured for the heightened magic layered deep within his bones. Now, years later, Daniel is a petty thief with a forged identity. Hiding amid the crowds in Los Angeles--the capital of the Kingdom of Southern California--Daniel is trying to go straight. But his crime-boss uncle has a heist he wants Daniel to perform: break into the Hierarch's storehouse of magical artifacts and retrieve Sebastian's sword, an object of untold power. For this dangerous mission, Daniel will need a team he can rely on, so he brings in his closest friends from his years in the criminal world. There's Moth, who can take a bullet and heal in mere minutes. Jo Alverado, illusionist. The multitalented Cassandra, Daniel's ex. And, new to them all, the enigmatic, knowledgeable Emma, with her British accent and her own grudge against the powers-that-be. The stakes are high, and the stage is set for a showdown that might just break the magic that protects a long-corrupt regime. Extravagant and yet moving, Greg van Eekhout's "California Bones" is an epic adventure set in a city of canals and secrets and casual brutality--different from the world we know, yet familiar and true.
