Sinopse

In "Du Bois: Selected Essays," W.E.B. Du Bois emerges as a pivotal voice in American literature and social thought, weaving together profound insights on race, identity, and democracy. The collection showcases his characteristic eloquence and formidable analytical skills, reflecting his commitment to social justice and equality. Du Bois's essays traverse a range of genres, from sociological analysis to literary criticism, framed within the historical context of post-Reconstruction America. His incisive dissection of systemic racism and the complexities of African American life influences contemporary discourse and challenges readers to critically engage with issues of race and class. W.E.B. Du Bois, a leading intellectual of the early 20th century and co-founder of the NAACP, significantly impacted the conversations surrounding race in America. An advocate of Pan-Africanism and a proponent of higher education for African Americans, Du Bois's upbringing in Massachusetts and academic pursuits at Fisk University and Harvard University shaped his perspectives on social equality. His personal experiences with systemic injustice fueled his writings, culminating in this essential anthology that captures his vision for a more equitable society. "Du Bois: Selected Essays" is recommended for readers eager to immerse themselves in the thought-provoking ideas of one of history's most important social theorists. This compilation not only enriches our understanding of the past but also serves as a catalyst for ongoing discussions about race, identity, and social reform in contemporary society.

    Chicago - A Biography

Chicago has been called by many names. Nelson Algren declared it a “City on the Make.” Carl Sandburg dubbed it the “City of Big Shoulders.” Upton Sinclair christened it “The Jungle,” while New Yorkers, naturally, pronounced it “the Second City.”
At last there is a book for all of us, whatever we choose to call Chicago. In this magisterial biography, historian Dominic Pacyga traces the storied past of his hometown, from the explorations of Joliet and Marquette in 1673 to the new wave of urban pioneers today. The city’s great industrialists, reformers, and politicians—and, indeed, the many not-so-great and downright notorious—animate this book, from Al Capone and Jane Addams to Mayor Richard J. Daley and President Barack Obama. But what distinguishes this book from the many others on the subject is its author’s uncommon ability to illuminate the lives of Chicago’s ordinary people. Raised on the city’s South Side and employed for a time in the stockyards, Pacyga gives voice to the city’s steelyard workers and kill floor operators, and maps the neighborhoods distinguished not by Louis Sullivan masterworks, but by bungalows and corner taverns.
Filled with the city’s one-of-a-kind characters and all of its defining moments, Chicago: A Biography is as big and boisterous as its namesake—and as ambitious as the men and women who built it.

  • Steve McQueen & Charles Bronson: The Lives and Careers of the Top Action Stars of the 1970s - cover

    Steve McQueen & Charles Bronson:...

In the 1960s and 1970s, no actor personified cool, calm and collected like Steve McQueen, whose suave anti-hero protagonists made men jealous and women swoon. As actor Donald Logue puts it in The Tao of Steve, “Steve is the prototypical cool American male. He's the guy on his horse, the guy alone. He has his own code of honor, his own code of ethics, his own rules of living. He never, ever tries to impress the women, but he always gets the girl." And indeed, that was the case not only in movies like The Thomas Crown Affair, Bullitt, The Getaway, and Papillon, but also in real life. Actress Ali MacGraw, who later became one of his wives, described his effect on women: "I remember seeing him across the swimming pool and my knees were knocking. He radiated such macho energy. Men wanted to be like him. Uptight society ladies and biker molls wanted to be with him." But unlike many actors who become this type of heartthrob, McQueen seemed to have the bona fides.
To accompany the rough-hewn appearance of Charles Bronson’s new class of hero, the typical script gave his remarkably enduring persona little to say in terms of dialogue that would reveal his inner thoughts. With minimal text, even those he attempts to help are unsure of his intentions, and few clues are offered by which the viewer can come to know his mind. As the grotesqueness of his characters’ violent acts increased, so did the heinous deeds of the criminals he fought, upping the ante to an eager public in search of a simple cure for its social ills. In a career of almost eighty films and a total body of work totaling 160 appearances including television, Bronson pushed the envelope of what graphic action the studios were willing to offer, what the censors would accept, and what the sensibilities of movie-goers were able to endure more than anyone in his era.
