Summary

Classic Books Library presents this brand new edition of Washington Irving's Gothic tale, "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow". Originally published in 1820 as part of the collection, “The Sketchbook of Geoffrey Crayon”, it tells the story of Ichabod Crane who visits the town of Sleepy Hollow, which is plagued by the ghost of a headless horseman. Acknowledged as one of the most iconic and gripping horror tales in American literature, it contributed to Irving’s reputation for dramatic flair and wit. Washington Irving (1783-1859) was an American author, historian and diplomat. Although settling in New York, Irving studied in Europe where he developed his literary interests and later became one of the first American writers to earn influential and critical acclaim in Europe.

THIS IS AN INVITATION TO DROWNING. These are the stories of things out of water--of sea bed deserts choked with ghosts; of the lonely, roving children of the fen. Here your garden grows belowground. You will be born into a cradle of your own bones, shadows will burst from your eyes, and your mouth will fill with thorns. Storms will twist inside you, and the ghosts of your past will follow you and chart your future. Here, things are out of place--ectopic and unviable--and you will mourn the unborn, those underwater things out of water.

In Sawgamet, a north woods boomtown gone bust, the cold of winter breaks the glass of the schoolhouse thermometer, and the dangers of working in the cuts are overshadowed by the mysteries and magic lurking in the woods. Stephen, a pastor, is at home on the eve of his mother's funeral, thirty years after the mythic summer his grandfather returned to the town in search of his beloved but long-dead wife. And like his grandfather, Stephen is forced to confront the losses of his past. Touch introduces you to a world where monsters and witches oppose singing dogs and golden caribou, where the living and the dead part and meet again in the crippling beauty of winter and the surreal haze of summer. Nominated for the Governor General Literary Award.
