  Herbert George Wells (1866 – 1946) was a prolific English witer, now best remembered for his science fiction novels, and is often credited as being the father of science fiction."Aepyornis Island" is the strange tale of a naturalist who find himself adrift in a canoe in the Indian Ocean, with three mysterious rare giant eggs which he has collected. He knows they are the eggs of the Aepyornis - a bird which has been extinct for hundreds of years. He is amazed when hunger forces him to try one of the eggs, to find that it is fresh. When he opens the second egg several days later, he is horrified to find a still live embryo inside it. Before he is forced to eat the third and final egg, his canoe is cast up on a deserted atoll, where he finds fresh water and plenty of fish in the lagoon. Then the final egg hatches and the strangest part of the adventure begins.

  The Song of Hiawatha (1855) is an epic poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow that features Native American characters. The epic relates the adventures of an Ojibwe warrior named Hiawatha and the tragedy of his love for Minnehaha. Events in the story are set in the Pictured Rocks area on the south shore of Lake Superior. Longfellow's poem, though based on native oral traditions surrounding the figure of Manabozho, represents not a work of transmission but an original work of American Romantic literature.

  This wonderful novella, first published in 1899, has been described as a case study of 19th-century feminism. Kate Chopin began writing the novel in 1897 and, after its publication, it was heavily criticized as "not wholesome", "vulgar" and even "poison" by the press of the time. The novella received such a wave of disdain that the once-popular author was forced into literary obscurity. The Awakening went out of print for more than 50 years. When it was rediscovered in the 1950s, critics were in wonder at its modern sensibility. A second edition was published in 1964. Now widely read, The Awakening is critically acclaimed and it is an absolute must-read for feminists everywhere, not only for its beautiful pros but as an acknowledgment of how far we have come, albeit far more slowly than some might have hoped.
