An expert’s step-by-step guide to authentic Native American crafts from clothing and headdresses to weapons and musical instruments.   W. Ben Hunt, whose Sioux name was Tasunka Witko, traveled throughout the Midwest, living with several Native American tribes, finally settling near the site of the last Sioux uprising. In Native American Survival Skills, Hunt provides step-by-step instructions and exact dimensions to make Sioux ghost shirts, Plains Indian shields, box traps, Iniut snowshoes, and more.   From making rawhide to putting the finishing touches on a pair of moccasins, beginners and seasoned woodsmen alike will enjoy making the tools and camp equipment that Native Americans used for centuries. Native American Survival Skills is a remarkable source of information about the Americans who first pioneered self-sufficient living. The author begins this fascinating book by tracing aircraft carrier development between the Wars. Eschewed by the Germans and Italians and with Britain squandering her early lead, the Americans and Japanese became front-runners.The Royal Navy learnt the hard way in the early stages of WW2 with the loss of HMS Courageous and Glorious but, following successes at Taranto and Matapan, the value of carriers was no longer in doubt. The sinking of Bismarck and the cataclysmic Pearl Harbor attack signaled the end of the Battleship era. Stung by such spectacular losses the US Navy threw its weight behind the carrier concept and the naval war in the Pacific (Guadalcanal, East Solomon Islands, Santa Cruz, Midmay and Leyte Gulf) revolved round carrier-borne aircraft.Meanwhile the carrier became pivotal in protecting vital convoys in the Atlantic, Arctic and Mediterranean. The author backs his arguments with copious examples of naval and air action.

Many readers will already be familiar with Uncle Remus’ favorite animal characters – Br’er Rabbit and Br’er Fox among them – and some of the popular tales concerning them. (To this day, “tar baby” as an expression for a particularly sticky situation that is almost impossible to solve, has passed into the English language and common use.) Even people who have never read any of these tales will know exactly why you don’t throw a rabbit into a briar patch, mainly because Walt Disney produced his first movie ever to use professional actors with animation, called “Song of the South”, based on the Uncle Remus tales.
Joel Chandler Harris, a newsman in Georgia, grew up listening to folktales told by the local black population. Later, he published his version of these tales in a series of stories printed in the “Atlanta Constitution.” The tales of, and by, Harris’ chief character Uncle Remus, an old black man scrabbling to make his living in the post-Civil War South, were extremely popular and widely read. Harris’ use of innovative spelling to give the reader a sense of the black dialect was considered novel. While this is not a book that will pass a current political correctness test, due to its use of labels for black folks which have gone out of polite conversation, Uncle Remus is a largely sympathetic look at post-war plantation life. Uncle Remus himself is a warm, folksy man of good humor and dry wit, and after finishing his animal stories, the remaining sayings and tales are a moment of history frozen in amber. (Summary by Mark)

Teachers and Translators: Enhancing their Reading and Writing Skills recommends that language teachers incorporate the reading and writing connection together with the influence of L1 culture as essential elements to achieve textual competence in the target language. The use of challenging magazine and newspaper articles with post-intermediate and advanced language learners has always been a priority in ESP (English for Specific Purposes). The purpose is to activate students' background knowledge, consolidate their critical thinking skills, raise their awareness in relation to varieties of English, figures of speech and coinages and, at the same time, encourage classroom research in such fields as journalese, legal and business English. Expository essay-writing is also incorporated in the course, following such patterns as the Comparison and Contrast essay and the Classification form
