She of the Mountains

Summary
The follow-up to the author’s God Loves Hair, self-published by the author and re-issued by Arsenal Pulp Press this fall. The format for both God Loves Hair and She of the Mountains is the same – text interspersed with vivid, full-color illustrations. However, where God Loves Hair is primarily a book for young people, She of the Mountains is designed more for adults (although young adults will also enjoy it). It is a book that shows the complexities of love in all its guises, transcending simple categories of desire, race, and spirituality. The title of the book honors the concept of the feminine in all its forms, including the policing of feminine behavior or attraction to the feminine. There are two concurrent stories in She of the Mountains: one features the Hindu family of Shiva, Parvati, and their son Ganesh, who Shiva decapitated, then replacing his head with that of an elephant to become a supreme deity. The other is a contemporary love story about a feminine young man of Indian origin who falls in love with a white woman. The juxtaposition of these stories underscores the fluidity of bodily identity and desire.
