An “utterly engrossing” novel of shapeshifting, sorcery, and two brothers at war by a World Fantasy Award–winning author (Publishers Weekly). Born to the shape-shifting dragon king of Ippa, twin brothers Karadur and Tenjiro share an ancestry, but not a bloodline. Only Karadur carries dragon blood, destined to one day become a dragon and rule the kingdom. In an act of jealous betrayal, Tenjiro steals the talisman that would allow Karadur to take his true dragon form and flees to a distant, icy realm. Now, years later, Tenjiro has reappeared as the evil sorcerer Ankoku. His frozen stronghold threatens to destroy Dragon Keep, and Karadur must lead his shape-shifting warriors on a journey to defeat his brother and reclaim his destiny. With Dragon’s Winter, World Fantasy Award–winning author Elizabeth A. Lynn returns with the kind of richly drawn characters and intricate worlds her fans, both old and new, will love.

    Interview with the Author:

So what makes this short story collection so special?
William Meikle: Samurai and other stories contains a real cross section of what I'm all about as a writer. There's fantasy, swordplay, supernatural beasts, sword and sorcery, ghosts, horror, history, humor and a lot of particularly Scottish characters in weird situations. It's also got some of what I think of as my strongest work, whether its in the quieter ghost stories, or the blood and thunder sword swinging. I'm very proud of it as a collection, and Crystal Lake have done a wonderful job in the packaging, especially in the brilliant Ben Baldwin cover that captures the title story perfectly.

Tell us more about your title story.
William Meikle: Samurai is a cautionary tale of being careful what you wish for. A group of shipwrecked sailors find shelter in an ancient abandoned Japanese temple. They proceed to sack it of its treasures - but find, to their cost, that the temple has a guardian, and that service comes with a stiff price. It's a fantasy fable, with more Scots in trouble, more swordplay, and a splash of red gore in the green jungle. It runs in my head like a movie, and in fact, I think it would make a great one, if somebody has the cash for it.

Why should readers give Samurai and Other Stories a try?
William Meikle: It's packed with entertainment, at least I think so. My ethos as a writer is that story comes first, and I like to think that shows in this collection, whether it be in tales of adventure, or misadventure, spooky goings on in coal mines, strange musicians, poltergeists, magial relics, or the people that nobody expects. A wee bit of something for everybody.

Do you have other books featuring these some of the characters in this book?
William Meikle: The main recurring character is Derek Adams, the Midnight Eye, a Glasgow P.I. who keeps getting sucked into supernatural cases. He's in three novels, THE AMULET, THE SIRENS and THE SKIN GAME that are available in ebook, paperback and audiobook,  and he's in a handful of short stories now too. I'm sure he'll be in several more in years to come.

A half-human half-dragon liege struggles to control his inner beast and preserve a kingdom in this masterful tale from a two-time World Fantasy Award winner. The new lord of Dragon’s Keep, Karadur Atani assumed ultimate power by destroying his malevolent twin brother and usurping his throne. Determined to rule wisely and benevolently in the world of Ippa, the changeling fears he will fall victim to the madness that plagued his father. And he knows he must keep his violent and unpredictable dragon nature in check.   Sometimes, however, the dragon’s vengeance must be unleashed. When foul murder in the countryside demands justice, Karadur assumes his most fearsome form to destroy the outlaw Unamira clan with fire—and without mercy.   But two members of the family survive his wrath. Karadur will take one, the beautiful herbalist Maia, as a lover in order to soothe his troubled heart and volatile spirit, and to produce the dragon-changeling heir he so fervently desires. The other, Maia’s half-brother, Taran, will pursue the criminal life he was born into, becoming a dangerous scourge, a pitiless avenger, and a threat to the fragile peace of the dragon lord’s realm.   The winner of two World Fantasy Awards—one of the genre’s most prestigious honors—author Elizabeth A. Lynn adds new depth to the medieval fantasy world she first conceived in Dragon’s Winter. Rich in color, character, and imagination, Dragon’s Treasure is further proof of Lynn’s exceptional world-building skills as she presents a fantastic adventure as enthralling as the best dragon tales of Anne McCaffrey, Robin Hobb, or George R. R. Martin.
