Summary

In 2018, the first genetically-modified children were born.
Now we have the tools to reshape the future of our species.
With a pair of genetic scissors known as CRISPR, we can potentially select the traits of our children, or avoid ageing, or cure disease. But with that ability comes a new set of risks, forcing us to face hard ethical questions.
Torill Kornfeldt has travelled all over the world to meet the people driving this research forward. She has visited fertility clinics in South Korea, oncologists in China who are experimenting on sick patients, and biohackers in the US who want to make the new technology available to everyone. In The Unnatural Selection of Our Species, she asks: How are we supposed to handle these new tools that could end up changing our genetic material?
'Well written, knowledgeable, and engaging – exactly how really good popular science is supposed to be' Gustav Källstrand, Nobel Centre

First published in 1917, The Glugs of Gosh satirizes Australian life at the start of the twentieth century - but the absurdities it catalogs seem just as prevalent at the start of the twenty-first. The foolishness of kings, the arrogance of the elite, the gullibility of crowds, the pride of the self-righteous, the unthinking following of tradition - all find themselves the targets of C. J. Dennis' biting wit. (Summary by Chris Goringe).

How can we be proud of a system of justice that often pressures the innocent to plead guilty? How can we claim that justice is equal when we imprison thousands of poor Black men for relatively modest crimes but rarely prosecute rich white executives who commit crimes having far greater impact? How can we applaud the Supreme Court's ever-more-limited view of its duty to combat excesses by the president? The federal judge Jed S. Rakoff, a leading authority on white-collar crime, explores these and other puzzles in Why the Innocent Plead Guilty and the Guilty Go Free, a startling account of our broken legal system. Grounded in Rakoff's twenty-four years as a federal trial judge in New York in addition to the many years he worked as a federal prosecutor and criminal defense lawyer, Rakoff's assessment of our justice system illuminates some of our most urgent legal, social, and political issues: plea deals and class-action lawsuits, corporate impunity and the death penalty, the perils of eyewitness testimony and forensic science, the war on terror and the expanding reach of the executive branch. A fundamental problem, he reveals, is that the judiciary is constraining its own constitutional powers.

A long time ago, scientists proved that drugs like cocaine and heroin were addictive in rat studies. They’d put a rat in a cage and give it two options to drink ordinary water, or water laced with the drug. Pretty soon the rat started preferring the drug and eventually became addicted and overdosed itself. So scientists proved that drugs were 'chemically' addictive.
But some other scientists started noticing an interesting trend, during the Vietnam war. It became known that a huge number of soldiers fighting in Vietnam were routinely using heroin to cope with the stress. Everyone started freaking out, thinking that after the war we’d have a mass epidemic of drug addicted return soldiers wandering around. But funnily enough, they found that once they came home, very few return soldiers continued the habit. They started asking questions. Such as, how come when little old grannies go into hospital dosed up on morphine for weeks on end, they don’t tend to go home still hooked on opioid pain killers? Obviously some people do, but most don’t. So if its so addictive, how can this be explained?
In this book we discover what exactly creates an addictive personality and how addictive personalities become addicted to drugs and behaviours. What exactly is it about certain people that behave in addictive ways and others that have no problems giving 'chemically' addictive things up. We list the two main cause of addictive personalities, where they come from, how they develop and how to get rid of them and overcome addiction once and for all.
If you have an addictive personality, have a partner or perhaps a son or daughter with an addictive personality this book is for you.

A Columbia Law School team’s in-depth examination of one man’s 1989 wrongful conviction and execution for murder.    In 1989, Texas executed Carlos DeLuna, a poor Hispanic man with childlike intelligence, for the murder of Wanda Lopez, a convenience store clerk. His execution passed unnoticed for years until a team of Columbia Law School faculty and students chose to investigate his case and found that DeLuna almost certainly was innocent. No one had cared enough about either the defendant or the victim to make sure the real perpetrator was found. Everything that could go wrong in a criminal case did.   DeLuna’s conviction was based on a single, nighttime, cross-ethnic eyewitness identification with no corroborating forensic evidence. At his trial, DeLuna’s defense—that another Carlos had committed the crime—was not taken seriously. The lead prosecutor told the jury that the other Carlos, Carlos Hernandez, was a “phantom” of DeLuna’s imagination. In upholding the death penalty on appeal, both the state and federal courts concluded the same thing: Carlos Hernandez did not exist. However, he not only existed, but also had a long history of violent crimes . . .   This book and its website (thewrongcarlos.net) reproduce law-enforcement, crime lab, lawyer, court, social service, media, and witness records, as well as court transcripts, photographs, radio traffic, and audio and videotaped interviews, documenting one of the most comprehensive investigations into a criminal case in US history.  “This book will become a classic in the field.” —Austin Sarat, Amherst College  “[An] infuriating yet engrossing book on wrongful conviction...An important critique of our legal system.” —Publishers Weekly
