Summary

This is an unsparing telling, from experience, of two strokes and two periods of recovery in a period of over twenty years:
'…All I can do with honesty is to set down some of my experiences since March, 2000, in the hope someone may benefit from them, even if only slightly…'
'…I don't know if he could understand anything of what I was saying, although I have to doubt it. He was telling me to calm down and rest. Then it went dark.'
'…It would be good to record that the sunbeams broke into the ward to herald the new dawn ... They didn't. The morning light was sombre. Still, my darkest night was over.'

LIGHTNING STRIKES TWICE is a detailed recounting of the experiences of an author who had two severe strokes and underwent two long periods of recovery and rehabilitation over a period of twenty years. The story is told with a lightness of touch and a generous helping of humour. The World itself has taken some hard knocks over the same period and Tom East does not try to ignore these. Nor does he forget the important part played by others in his recovery. To quote directly from what he writes: 'The story is by no means all dark. If I have learned anything since the Millennium, it is how ready to be helpful, concerned, and considerate in a non-patronising way almost everyone has been. I have been given an object lesson in the finest qualities of human nature' and 'The formal dedication to my family at the front of this book is richly deserved. No-one has helped me more than they. Yet I must also thank friends, other relatives, former colleagues, medical and other professionals of all kinds, acquaintances and even a large number of complete strangers, some of whose names I never found out, for the genuine kindness they have shown to me.'
If you have yourself survived any kind of stroke, someone close to you has, or you are reading for more than purely scientific reasons, this book will be of interest to you.

Yoga Body: The Origins of Modern...

    Mark Singleton

Yoga is so prevalent in the modern world--practiced by pop stars, taught in schools, and offered in yoga centers, health clubs, and even shopping malls--that we take its presence, and its meaning, for granted. But how did the current yoga boom happen? And is it really rooted in ancient Indian
practices, as many of its adherents claim?

In this groundbreaking book, Mark Singleton calls into question many commonly held beliefs about the nature and origins of postural yoga (asana) and suggests a radically new way of understanding the meaning of yoga as it is practiced by millions of people across the world today. Singleton shows
that, contrary to popular belief, there is no evidence in the Indian tradition for the kind of health and fitness-oriented asana practice that dominates the global yoga scene of the twenty-first century. Singleton's surprising--and surely controversial--thesis is that yoga as it is popularly
practiced today owes a greater debt to modern Indian nationalism and, even more surprisingly, to the spiritual aspirations of European bodybuilding and early 20th-century women's gymnastic movements of Europe and America, than it does to any ancient Indian yoga tradition. This discovery enables
Singleton to explain, as no one has done before, how the most prevalent forms of postural yoga, like Ashtanga, Bikram and "Hatha" yoga, came to be the hugely popular phenomena they are today.

Drawing on a wealth of rare documents from archives in India, the UK and the USA, as well as interviews with the few remaining, now very elderly figures in the 1930s Mysore asana revival, Yoga Body turns the conventional wisdom about yoga on its head.

Go for the win! Achieve excellence and be better than you’ve ever been!
In his years as a professional ice-skater, Olympic Gold Medalist Scott Hamilton learned to embrace the mind-set of working hard to “beat” the competition. But it seems competition has gotten a bad rap these days. We’ve bought into the belief that it is unfair to participants to rank performance. Yet competition is in fact a good thing because it’s about working toward excellence.
Finish First is a wake-up call for business leaders, entrepreneurs, spouses, parents, and even students to stop settling for mediocre and begin to revitalize their intrinsic will to achieve excellence and go for the win. Most of us feel we were made for something more, but we’re often afraid to allow ourselves to be competitive because we think our finishing first might somehow rob others of their chance to shine. This book encourages the hidden potential, the champion within all of us, to come out—which eventually brings our family, marriage, career, business, and the world around us the greatest possible good.
