Beschreibung

In "The Little Violinist," Thomas Bailey Aldrich presents a poignant exploration of childhood innocence juxtaposed with the harsh realities of life. Written in lyrical prose, Aldrich weaves a narrative that captures the essence of youthful dreams through the eyes of a young musician whose talent transcends his impoverished background. The book is steeped in the literary traditions of 19th-century American realism, characterized by its attention to emotional depth and social critique, inviting readers to reflect on the intersection of art and adversity in a rapidly changing society. Aldrich, a notable figure in American literature, was deeply influenced by his own experiences growing up in a modest family and his passion for music. His diverse career as a poet, editor, and novelist provided him unique insights into the complexities of human emotion and societal constraints. This background informed Aldrich's intent to shed light on the aspirations and struggles of the underprivileged, particularly through the lens of youth in "The Little Violinist." This evocative tale is a must-read for those interested in the delicate interplay between artistry and hardship. Aldrich's masterful storytelling invites empathy and reflection, making it a timeless narrative that resonates with both young readers and adults alike.

    Will I Hate Myself? - A Story...

    Pat Treuer

What if chasing your dream didn’t lead to fame or fortune—but to something far more honest?
At 36, Pat Treuer had the life people post about: six-figure job, corporate status, an apartment with a skyline view—and a quiet voice in his head screaming, “Is this it?” So he did what any rational person would do: he walked away from it all to tell jokes in bars for drink tickets and half-interested crowds.
Then came the pandemic. Pat launched a comedy business that brought in a million dollars—then reinvested every penny into a YouTube series that made exactly zero. Not a typo. Zero.
By 42, he found himself not chasing the next punchline, but rebuilding a life from scratch. On purpose, this time.
Will I Hate Myself is a hilariously raw, painfully honest memoir about risking everything, failing gloriously, and learning to create a life that actually fits. It’s part comedy crash reel, part spiritual sledgehammer.
If you’ve ever wondered whether you waited too long to change your life, felt stuck in a “successful” version of someone else’s dream, or asked yourself, “Is this all there is?”—this book is for you.
Through panic attacks, bad gigs, and moments of absurd grace, Pat offers more than laughs—he offers proof that it’s never too late to go off-script and start telling the truth.
This isn’t about making it. It’s about making it count.

Created by Merwin Gerard and produced by Collier Young, One Step Beyond was hosted by John Newland, "your guide to the supernatural" (also credited as "Our guide into the world of the unknown"). Newland, who also directed every episode, presented tales that explored paranormal events and various situations that defied "logical" explanation. Unlike other anthology programs, the ABC network series episodes were presented in the form of straightforward 30-minute docudramas, all said to be based on "human record" (implying historically factual events); however, the incidents depicted were closer to popular urban legends dramatized for the screen. The program included the corporate name of sponsor Alcoa in its title for its initial run. In syndication, the program title became simply One Step Beyond.   This volume includes Four tales of the supernatural from worlds beyond our own. Included are: Episode One: The Bride Posessed - A bride begins to predict features of an area she's never seen.  Audio from the television broadcast of January 20th, 1959; Episode Two: Night of April 14th - A girl dreams of drowning in the ocean, then learns her fiance plans a honeymoon for them -- aboard the Titanic.  Audio from the television broadcast of January 27th, 1959; Episode Three: Emergency Only - Coming out of a hypnotic trance, Ellen Larrabee predicts a dangerous train trip for a skeptical witness.  Audio from the television broadcast of February 3rd, 1959; and Episode Four: The Dark Room - A Woman photographer is almost strangled by a man she doesn't know.  Audio from the television broadcast of February 10th, 1959.
