Summary

The filming of the first horror films coincides with the creation of the actual cinema. Various actors, having experienced stage debut, will then be offered roles of iconic characters from Gothic fantasy literature. This was the case of Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi, known worldwide for their interpretations of the monster Frankenstein and Count Dracula.

Therefore, two superstars in both senses of the term, who knew to impose, at the same time, the ‘terror’ gender and illustrate by their subtle play, the terror characters as their authors had imagined them. Two destinies, sometimes united on the screen, though very different in life as in their careers... Two personalities, having wonderfully served a difficult style by their ability to adapt to the demands of their roles that often made them look tyrannical... Two exemplary careers in many ways, whose stories are read like an adventure novel that gives true meaning to the term ‘film pioneers’...

These are the elements that make up this book.

Bruce Wannell was the greatest Orientalist traveller of his generation: a Paddy Leigh Fermor of the East, a Kim for our time. He lived through the Iranian Revolution, worked for a decade in the North West Frontier during the wars in Afghanistan, could transcribe the most complex Arabic calligraphy by sight and spoke Iranian and Afghan Persian with a dazzling, poetic fluency. His curious combination of talents – linguist, musician, translator and teacher – were duplicated by an international network of friendships with scholars, poets, spies, aid-workers, archaeologists, diplomats, artists and writers. Bruce could quote Hafez from memory, rustle up a lethal cocktail, lose himself in Brahms, open any door, organise a concert within days of arriving in a foreign city or walk across a mountain with just walnuts and dried mulberries in his pocket. He was a true original, remembered here with affection, humour and wonder by over eighty of his friends and collaborators.

"The Stories Models Never Tell. The darker side of fashion. Christine Hart reflects on a 10-year career with this, her first book. Sexual abuse of her colleagues, addictions and a catwalk show for Colonel Gadaffi, all in a world ruled by the dictatorship of beauty". The Stories Models Never Tell, a deeply intimate, thoroughly personal project. To avoid falling into sensationalism, or creating a purely commercial, media-centred work (as suggested by the large publishing houses), Hart chose to set up her own firm, enabling her to present the reader a genuine autobiography, narrated in a way that's both transparent and absolutely sincere. There's no fiction here, nor the superfluous anecdotes that some editors demanded as a way to increase sales.

John Wayne Gacy raped, tortured, and murdered 33 boys and young men, burying most of them in the crawlspace under his Chicago home. Karen Conti was in high school at the time watching the bodies being removed on the television news. Fourteen years pass. Through a twist of fate, Conti, now a young and inexperienced attorney, is called upon to handle Gacy’s final death row appeals. The serial killer soon becomes her most famous, difficult, and haunting client. Thirty years after Gacy’s execution, Conti looks back through the eyes of a seasoned professional on the legal and media circus that ensued—and her countless hours of detailed conversation with the killer clown. We hear for the first time about Gacy’s gruesome “Body Book.” Were there more victims? Conspirators involved in the murders? What secrets were buried with him? If one were to ask Conti “How could you represent such a monster?,” she would respond “What you really want to know is, ‘What was he like?’” This book answers that question.
