Summary

A therapist shares her patients’ experiences—and her own—during the dramatic disruption of the Covid crisis. By turns a memoir, a chronicle, and a provocative contemplation of life in a socially distanced and virtual world, How Are You? tells the story of a therapist plunged overnight into the unsettling reality of a pandemic and all-virtual therapy. Therese Rosenblatt shares her privileged front-row seat into the hearts and minds of her patients, to report on what has gone on inside real peoples’ heads from the dark, early days of the pandemic through its long, drawn-out progression. Dr. Rosenblatt then trains her attuned eyes and ears onto herself, sharing some of her experiences and challenges—and unexpected pleasures—as she navigates this new world together with her patients. In addition to recounting how her patients are coping with loss, loneliness, and isolation, as well as overcrowding with relatives, spouses, and partners and challenges with substance use, she opens a window into her private thoughts as she conducts her sessions. All the while, she contemplates the specter of catastrophic illness and the move to an existence liberated from the physical space of the consulting room, yet missing its comforts and human sensibilities. Whether addressing difficult marriages, ambivalence about pregnancy, or young adults trying to launch into the world while locked down with their parents, Dr. Rosenblatt offers insight gleaned from twenty-six years of practice—and explores in depth this historic event’s psychological effects on us as individuals.

This physician’s “inspiring” account of overcoming a devastating brain injury “will assist patients, families, and friends enduring the same difficulties” (Library Journal).   Locked inside a brain-injured head looking out at a challenging world is the premise of this extraordinary memoir chronicling the long process of adjustment and rehabilitation after a fateful, helmetless bike ride. In Over My Head, Claudia Osborn, a doctor and clinical professor of medicine, recounts coming to terms with the loss of her identity and the courageous steps (and hilarious missteps) she took while learning to rebuild her life.   For years, Osborn was deprived of the career she loved and the intellectual companionship of her professional colleagues—and the ability to handle the simplest undertakings like shopping for groceries or sorting the mail. Her progression from confusion, dysfunction, and alienation to a full, happy life is told here with restraint, great style, and considerable humor.   “Exceptionally well-written and engaging.” —Publishers Weekly

    Code IT Primary Programming Series
Basic computer coding is now among the most important skills a child can have for their future. There are many programming languages designed specifically for children to begin their studies, but the Scratch programming language, already recognised in schools around the world, is widely considered as the ideal place to begin programming in early education.
The highly successful Code-It series is a comprehensive guide to teaching Scratch to children in a classroom setting. It is designed for the UK-based KS2 curriculum but can easily be used to supplement other programming courses for children between the ages of 7 and 11.
There are four pupil workbooks designed to work in conjunction with the Code-It teacher handbook. They provide structure and resources for the children, including optional homework activities to extend to learning outside the classroom.
Workbook 2 explains how to think, program and debug exciting programming projects such as Maths Quiz, Music Algorithm to Music Code, Slug Trail Game, Selection Investigation and Teach Your Computer To Do Maths . It also outlines how to use analytical computational thinking skills for algorithm design, algorithm evaluation, decomposition and generalisation; extend resilience and problem solving through the computational doing skills of converting algorithm into code and debugging; and consolidate sequence and repetition in programming whilst introducing selection and variable use.

Winner of the George Polk Award: Charles Rembar’s illuminating account of overturning America’s obscenity laws and protecting literature from censorship Up until the 1960s, depending on your state of residence, your copy of Henry Miller’s Tropic of Cancer might be seized by the US Postal Service before reaching your mailbox. Selling copies of Cleland’s Fanny Hill in your bookstore was considered illegal. Lady Chatterley’s Lover by D. H. Lawrence was, according to the American legal system, pornography with no redeeming social value.   Today, these novels are celebrated for their literary and historic worth. The End of Obscenity is Charles Rembar’s account of successfully arguing the merits of such great works of literature in front of the Supreme Court. As the lead attorney on the case, he—with the support of a few brave publishers—changed the way Americans read and honor books, especially the controversial ones.   Filled with insight from lawyers, justices, and the authors themselves, The End of Obscenity is a lively tour de force. Racy testimony and hilarious asides make Rembar’s memoir not only a page-turner but also an enlightening look at the American legal system.

Ross Donaldson is one of just a few who have ventured into dark territory of a country ravaged by war to study one of the world's most deadly diseases. As an untried medical student studying the intersection of global health and communicable disease, Donaldson soon found himself in dangerous Sierra Leone, on the border of war-struck Liberia, where he struggled to control the spread of Lassa Fever. The words, "you know Lassa can kill you, don't you?" haunted him each day. With the country in complete upheaval and working conditions suffering, he is forced to make life-and-death decisions alone as a never-ending onslaught of contagious patients flood the hospital. Soon however, he is not only fighting for others but himself when he becomes afflicted with a life threatening disease. The Lassa Ward is more than just an adventure story about the making of a physician; it is a portrait of the Sierra Leone people and the human struggle of those risking their daily comforts and lives to aid them.
