Summary

Joyfully melding knowing humour and torqued-up wordplay, Holbrook’s second collection is a comic fusion of the experimental and the experiential, the procedural and the lyric. Punch lines become sucker punches, line breaks slip into breakdowns, the serious plays comical and the comical turns deadly serious. Holbrook’s poems don’t use humour as much as they deconstruct the comic impulse, exposing its roots in the political, the psychological and the emotional life of the mind. Many of these poems import shapes and source texts from elsewhere – home inspection reports, tampon instructions, poems by Lorca – in a series of translations, transpositions and transgressions that invite a more intimate and critical rapport with the written word. This is not merely a book, it is a chocolate-covered artificially intelligent virus with an impish sense of humour that will continue to replicate in your mind long after initial exposure.
Available since: 09/14/2005.

The acclaimed epic prose-poem from one of America’s greatest poets and the three-time winner of the Pulitzer Prize.

A long poem that makes brilliant use of the legends and myths, the tall tales and sayings of America. As Irish poet Padraic Colum said, “The fine thing about The People, Yes is that it is indubitable speech. Here is a man speaking, a man who knows all sorts and conditions of men, who can be wise and witty, stirring and nonsensical with them all. Carl Sandburg is a master of his own medium; he can deliver himself with the extraordinary clarity of the comic strip caption, with the punch of the tip-top editorial, with the jingle of the American ballad. If America has a folksinger today he is Carl Sandburg, a singer who comes out of the prairie soil, who has the prairie inheritance, who can hand back to the people a creation that has scraps of their own insight, humor, and imagination, a singer, it should be added, who both says and sings . . . He has a passion that gives dignity to all he says. It is a passion for humanity, not merely for the man with depths of personality in him, but for the ordinary man and woman . . . The People, Yes is his most appealing volume.”

    Praise for Carl Sandburg

“A poetic genius whose creative power has in no way lessened with the passing years.” —Chicago Tribune

“Carl Sandburg was more than the voice of America, more than the poet of its strength and genius. He was America.” — President Lyndon B. Johnson

Winston Smith is in prison, found guilty of Thoughtcrimes against Big Brother. As part of his reconstruction, he must re-enact key moments from his past life, with the help of other thought criminals, so that everyone can learn from his mistakes. Including his biggest mistake of all: falling in love with Julia.
George Orwell's classic dystopia 1984 is a still-resonant vision of the tolls of living under totalitarianism. Constructed almost entirely from dialogue taken from the original novel, this bold and powerful dramatisation restores the blazing heart of Orwell's work: a doomed love story, with the lovers at its centre.
This pre-eminently stageable version, adapted with an eye on economy by Nick Hern for a cast of five or more, is ideal for any school, youth group or amateur company looking to bring Orwell's chilling vision to life on stage.

The medieval classic that takes readers on a guided tour of the afterlife and on a spiritual journey toward God. Written in the fourteenth century, this epic poem continues to entrance readers as it explores the nine circles of hell, the mountain of purgatory, and the spheres of heaven, detailing those who inhabit each and the sins and virtues that led them there. This masterpiece is a work of literature, history, psychology, and philosophy—and a deeply insightful exploration of Christian theology that, in painting a picture of the afterlife, allows us to reflect on earthly life as well.

An outcast, an outsider, an oddball. With too much ambition and not enough talent, Saffron Jack has never fitted. Now, with the feeling that his time is running out, he needs to do something drastic to change his life. So what better idea than to run away to the nearest war zone and do the thing he's always wanted to do: start his own country and declare himself king...
"A bravura meditation on crown and country, borders, and what it means to belong." - Niven Govinden
"It's exciting to see what a poet already celebrated for their high-concept execution within individual poems can achieve when they have the courage to. The wide canvas of Saffron Jack allows Dastidar to untether his imagination and uses its permutational form to gather momentum and force as it zooms in and out on the titular antihero and his doomed and self-justified quest. Urgent, caustically funny and provocative – compulsory and deeply enjoyable reading." – Luke Kennard
