Summary

When Katy Carr and her sister Clover leave for an East Coast boarding school, they do so with trepidation. They can’t but help worry about how their father will manage without their help? Will they fit in, and if they don’t, what will become of them? Will they make new friends?

When the Carr girls arrive, they meet the principal, Mrs Florence, who is tall, dignified and very strict: there are no less than thirty-two rules that students must adhere to! And with Miss Jane always on the prowl, snooping to discover the slightest fault, Katy fears that it might be more difficult to stay out of trouble than she’d hoped.

But then Katy meets Rose Red – irrepressible, unconventional, and always full of fun. With the right friends, Katy can’t help but get into all sorts of scrapes.
A sequel to “What Katy Did”, this is book 2 in the “What Katy Did” series.

"The retelling of Solomon Northup's true story is a valuable contribution to black history. Readers of all ages will enjoy . . . this important account." -Charles A. Hicks, former Arkansas state supervisor of education"Solomon Northup's trials and tribulations are retold in such a way that young-adult readers will be totally captivated by his story." -Children's LiteratureSolomon Northup, a family man and hack driver in upstate New York, was kidnapped, whisked away from his home, and sold into slavery. His remarkable account of the epic journey from free man of color to slave to free man again is even more astonishing because it was written entirely from memory. As a slave, Northup was permitted neither pen nor paper, yet he was able to recall his ordeal in exacting detail.Considered one of the best firsthand accounts of the slavery experience, this autobiographical story, originally published in 1853, has been painstakingly rewritten for children aged eight through twelve. This story of perseverance presents to children a personal side of the often-detached history of slavery. Sue Eakin, who interpreted the story for a younger audience, saw her first copy of Solomon Northup's Twelve Years a Slave: 1841-1853 when she was just twelve years old. Years later, as a graduate student at Louisiana State University, she chose the book as the topic for her thesis.

It’s the last day of school before Christmas vacation and Alex, Chase, and the rest of Mrs. Walter’s fifth-grade class couldn’t wish more for the final bell to ring. But the day takes a crazy turn when a mysterious meteorite crashes through the classroom window—and a genie pops out! Bob, as he’s called, is willing to grant only one wish for the class to share, and if they can’t agree on something before the bell rings in an hour, they’ll get nothing at all. What follows is a debate that is at turns thought-provoking and hilarious—and at all times irresistible.

Animals’ rules of etiquette prove quite different from people’s in this “appealing [and] humorous” picture book (Kirkus Reviews).   Playing in the dirt, staying up all night, and leaving clothes strewn across the floor are not a problem if you’re a wild animal. Dunking food, burping, and splashing—no problem either. Human kids, who are expected to follow rules, rules, rules, will squeal with delight as the pages reveal wild animals getting away with all kinds of outlandish behavior—and will relish “knowing better”!   “This clever, well-executed book will grab children’s attention and make them laugh . . . A charmer [and] a great read-aloud.” —School Library Journal   “Young readers tired of obeying rules may find this silly walk on the wild side of animal behavior just impudent enough to suit their fancy.” —Publishers Weekly   “A witty look at breaking away from rules for a while, with a nod to reality in the end.” —Atlanta Parent (Staff Pick)
