Summary

A boy with the Heart of a Dragon…
Dragons of Desert and Dust
Fourteen-year-old Angel Cerillos is stuck living with foster parents at a second-rate desert motel while his mother is in the hospital. Despite threats from a local rancher and his greedy foster father, Angel is determined to scour the harsh desert for turquoise nuggets that could pay for his mom’s care. Without them, all he has of value is a carved, two-headed turquoise serpent, left to him by his mysterious father. It’s a hard life. But the desert spirits are awakening, and the mythic power of his dragon talisman spins Angel into terrifying danger.

Straddling three wildly different and distant places and eras with its legs wide open, There Came a Darkening from the West is a saga of epic proportions. Laden with dark, foreboding imagery and interwoven with hilarious strands of even darker humour, it’s about gods, power and sex – and the consequences of love, betrayal and greed in the fictional Citadel of Sputen Duyvil.

Charting the birth and eventual destruction of the Citadel through the eyes of the central characters, the tale takes us on a rollercoaster ride from a modern-day world on the brink of anarchy, where petrol’s a luxury only affordable for the super-rich; a place populated by con-artists and asset-strippers, money-men and robots, to mediaeval times teeming with serfs and lords, seamen and whores. It’s like a black-magic mix of Game of Thrones with Dungeons and Dragons with all the gore and glory of primitive tribal warfare as well as the more subtle but equally sickening consequences of its modern-day counterpart.

By turns other-worldly and in-your-face brash, with earthy language to match, There Came A Darkening from the West is a rare feat in that it’s apocalyptic, yet knows when to keep its tongue in its cheek.

Born in 1953 Nigel was part of the baby boomer years, growing up in the exciting times of the Sixties and Seventies when life seemed to hold so much promise. Educated at Framlingham College and Broxbourne Grammar School, Nigel went on to a career in the Display and Exhibition Sector working in both the retail and manufacturing sides of the business. Hobbies include the love of a good book, writing, photography and an insatiable appetite for good music. He is often to be found at London’s small but select venues appreciating the fine musicianship of the bands performing.

Elaine is an orphan girl who has grown up in a world where magical ability brings power. Her limited talent was enough to ensure a magical training but she's very inexperienced and was lucky to get a position working in the Great Library. Now, the Grand Sorcerer - the most powerful magician of them all - is dying, although initially that makes little difference to Elaine; she certainly doesn't have the power to compete for higher status in the Golden City. But all that changes when she triggers a magical trap and ends up with all the knowledge from the Great Library - including forbidden magic that no one is supposed to know - stuffed inside her head. This unwanted gift doesn't give her greater power, but it does give her a better understanding of magic, allowing her to accomplish far more than ever before.   It's also terribly dangerous. If the senior wizards find out what has happened to her, they will almost certainly have her killed. The knowledge locked away in the Great Library was meant to remain permanently sealed and letting it out could mean a repeat of the catastrophic Necromantic Wars of five hundred years earlier. Elaine is forced to struggle with the terrors and temptations represented by her newfound knowledge, all the while trying to stay out of sight of those she fears, embodied by the sinister Inquisitor Dread.   But a darkly powerful figure has been drawing up a plan to take the power of the Grand Sorcerer for himself; and Elaine, unknowingly, is vital to his scheme. Unless she can unlock the mysteries behind her new knowledge, divine the unfolding plan, and discover the truth about her own origins, there is no hope for those she loves, the Golden City or her entire world.

Taziem is a magnificent dragon: sexy, powerful, intelligent.  Like other dragons, she hoards diamonds, but unlike other dragons, she covets knowledge as well. So when the local villagers offer her one of their younglings as a sacrifice, she decides to take it home with her and study it so she might learn all there is to know about humans. If the youngling satisfies her curiosity, she’ll set it free eventually. If it disappoints, she’ll feed it to her soon-to-be-born dragonets.

As it so happens, the youngling is fearless, clever, and dragon-smart.  She quickly exceeds Taziem’s wildest expectations and winds up bonding with the newborns. Lathwi, The Soft One, they call her, and accept her as a tanglemate.  As they live and grow and play together, Lathwi forgets that she was ever human. After a time though, Taqziem must banish Lathwi from her territory for her own safety.

Forced into the human world again, Lathwi begins a journey of re-discovery, stumbling onto a plot to revive dragonkind’s ancient nemesis. She withstands sorcerous attacks and an onslaught of demons, but without her mother’s help, she knows she cannot defeat the evil that threatens to consume the world.

The question is, can she return to Taziem’s mountain in time to prevent an apocalypse?
