Summary

Duplex models can portray complex systems with the utmost of simplicity, clarity and efficacy. The value of the binomial approach shows up, for instance, in debunking the welter of myths and misconceptions that pervades the fields of finance and economics. According to the Efficient Market Hypothesis, the marketplace always reflects the totality of information available to the general public. Yet, the Efficient credo abounds with flaws ranging from unreal assumptions to faulty conclusions. A counterpoint involves the wave motion of the stock market that belies the premise of utter randomness. To underscore the gulf between the mythos and reality, the work plan takes a minimalist approach. For starters, the inquest draws only on a minute fraction of the trove of information available at the most popular portal among the investing public. Moreover, the quantitative analysis relies solely on the simplest technique in statistical testing. From a computational stance, the attendant program invokes a skimpy subset of the built-in functions within the core module of the R system: the leading choice of programming language and software platform for data science in disparate domains.

While supervising a small group of interns at a major New York medical center, Dr. Robert Marion asked three of them to keep a careful diary over the course of a year. Andy, Mark, and Amy vividly describe their real-life lessons in treating very sick children; confronting child abuse and the awful human impact of the AIDS epidemic; skirting the indifference of the hospital bureaucracy; and overcoming their own fears, insecurities, and constant fatigue. Their stories are harrowing and often funny; their personal triumph is unforgettable. This updated edition of The Intern Blues includes a new preface from the author discussing the status of medical training in America today and a new afterword updating the reader on the lives of the three young interns who first shared their stories with readers more than a decade ago.

Now in audio—a fascinating work of popular science from a world-renowned expert on mosquitoes and a prize-winning reporter.
In this lively and comprehensive portrait of the mosquito, its role in history, and its threat to mankind, Spielman and D'Antonio take a mosquito's-eye view of nature and man. They show us how mosquitoes breed, live, mate, and die, and introduce us to their enemies, both natural and man-made. The authors present tragic and often grotesque examples of how the mosquito has insinuated itself into human history, from the malaria that devastated invaders of ancient Rome to the current widespread West Nile fever panic.
Filled with little-known facts and remarkable anecdotes that bring this tiny being into larger focus, Mosquito offers fascinating, alarming, and convincing evidence that the sooner we get to know this pesky insect, the better off we'll be.

The true story of an Alaska Native village destroyed by flooding and erosion caused by climate change—and how they fought for help.

Warming Arctic temperatures have been making coastal areas of Alaska increasingly uninhabitable. In 2008, the small Alaska Native village of Kivalina filed a legal claim against some of the world’s largest fossil fuel companies for damaging their homeland and creating a false debate around climate change. Academic and former journalist Christine Shearer explores the history leading up to the lawsuit, its connections to disaster management and adaptation, and its relationship to past misinformation campaigns involving lead, asbestos, and tobacco. Kivalina’s struggle for safe relocation, the book argues, is part of our common struggle to acknowledge and address climate change before it is too late.

2012 Rachel Carson Environment Book Award (Honorable Mention)

    Praise for Kivalina

“Moving, infuriating, ominous . . . . Shearer provides an impressively concise and comprehensive history of the growth of corporate power in America; its influence on, entwinement with, and corruption of government; [and] corporate obfuscation of industrial hazards.” —Publisher’s Weekly

“Best book of 2011: one of the most timely and important books to be published in 2011—and in the past decade.” —Jeff Biggers, The Huffington Post

“In novelistic detail, Shearer recounts the science, politics, legal battles, and human experience at one of the leading edges of climate change impact. In doing so, she . . . tells the story not just of one village in Alaska, but of us all.” —The Society of Environmental Journalists
