Obsession takes over two lives: one brazenly, the other more sneakily in this witty black comedy of lust, academia, and Southern manners. When bachelor history professor, Max Finster, arrives in the university community of Oxford, Mississippi, and moves in next door to Don and Susan Shapiro, all of their lives head for dramatic change. Narrator Don, a professor of English, gradually becomes fascinated by Max, his mysterious past, polymathic mind, chameleon personality and strange sexual agenda. Max gets busy ravishing a series of obese women, each larger than the previous one, as Don theorizes and looks on, sometimes literally, via a peephole he has drilled through the apartment wall.   This sordid activity is set against a panorama of outwardly wholesome college life, but Don’s insider perspective digs beneath the facades both of professorial pretense and the institutionalized civility of the South. First-time novelist Galef, himself a tenured professor , writes knowingly of the academic scene, sparing no one, and sheds a whole new light on the subtleties of male bonding.

In the backstreets of Calcutta, shielded from the scorching sun by a tattered tarpaulin, mothers clutching semi-conscious, emaciated babies, and adults and children with missing or gangrenous limbs or suffering from tuberculosis or leprosy, queue in their hundreds to see Dr Jack Preger. On a stretch of pavement measuring two metres by thirty he runs a unique clinic. His patients are the destitute and the dispossessed, those who live and die on the streets. The clinic has survived for over a decade, in spite of official disapproval, and will soon be ministering to its 20,000th family.

Born and brought up in an orthodox Jewish family near Manchester, as a young adult Preger converted to Catholicism. In 1972 he qualified as a doctor and immediately left to set up a clinic in Bangladesh. Seven years later he was expelled after exposing a government-masterminded racket involving the illegal export of babies for adoption. Undeterred, he set off again the following year to begin his now legendary work in Calcutta.

Preger is a man of paradox. To the West Bengali authorities, he is an embarrassment and a nuisance, continually campaigning against official corruption, permanently awaiting trial for practicing without a licence, and vowing to fight the threatened closure of his clinic and resist deportation even at the risk of imprisonment. To the people of Calcutta, whose desperate suffering he struggles tirelessly to alleviate, he is a 'living saint'.

A self-confessed manic depressive, Preger relies on his work to sustain him. His two broken marriages - and two deserted children - bespeak a turbulent personal life which he finds difficult to reconcile with his reputation as a paragon of virtue. 'I am certainly no saint - nor have I ever been... A lot of the things that people imagine about someone like myself are just projected fantasies. The fact is that I happen to work with poor people. To me it's the most natural thing in the world.'

The Victorians may have attempted to show the world they were upright, strict and full of virtue but much of this thinking has been subverted by their erotic and pornographic writing. The full title of the book is Laura Middleton; Her Brother and Her Lover which rather gives the plot away as indeed this is the story of Laura's sexual awakening with both her brother and her lover who are both school chums and get extra chummy together thereby chronicling a wide range of sexual experiences both hetero and homosexual with the climax providing details of their ménage a trois. The daring nature of the book, detailing their sexual exploits, meant as with other Victorian pornographic literature, that it has no credited author. However, it is well written with greater character development than one might expect so definitely worth a read.

Warning. The following description is explicit. The Romance of Lust, or Early Experiences is a Victorian erotic novel published in four volumes by an Anonymous author. Told in the first person of protagonist Charlie Roberts it vividly describes his sexual initiation as he approaches his fifteenth birthday. Indeed it starts with a sexual experience with his sisters Eliza and Mary. His ensuing voyage of discovery thereafter includes a great many sexual exploits with his governesses, many male and female friends, and various acquaintances. Together they indulge their tastes for incest, orgies, masturbation, lesbianism, flagellation, fellatio, cunnilingus, gay sex, anal sex, and double penetration. It is not writing that at first thought you would associate with the Victoria era but then again these novels unleash themselves with an abandon to suggest it’s all there just waiting to be revealed.
