Summary

First in-depth study of the use of landscape in fantasy literatureWinner of the Mythopoeic Scholarship Award for Myth and Fantasy Studies (2016) Fantasy worlds are never mere backdrops. They are an integral part of the work, and refuse to remain separate from other elements. These worlds combine landscape with narrative logic by incorporating alternative rules about cause and effect or physical transformation. They become actors in the drama—interacting with the characters, offering assistance or hindrance, and making ethical demands. In Here Be Dragons, Stefan Ekman provides a wide-ranging survey of the ubiquitous fantasy map as the point of departure for an in-depth discussion of what such maps can tell us about what is important in the fictional worlds and the stories that take place there. With particular focus on J. R. R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings, Ekman shows how fantasy settings deserve serious attention from both readers and critics. Includes insightful readings of works by Steven Brust, Garth Nix, Robert Holdstock, Terry Pratchett, Charles de Lint, China Miéville, Patricia McKillip, Tim Powers, Lisa Goldstein, Steven R. Donaldson, Robert Jordan, and Neil Gaiman and Charles Vess.

There will be times when you will feel so angry and upset because of your child’s behaviors, which is actually normal and understandable.
However, note that while getting angry at your child from time to time is normal, it is still important for you to learn how to manage it, especially if this emotion is already affecting your relationship with them. You love your child deeply and unconditionally, but your anger and frustration may accumulate during the 24 hours you parent them daily. This may cause you to experience moments when you feel like you will blow up and explode.
If you feel like you have problems controlling your anger at your child, especially when they behave defiantly or have tantrums, this book can help. Through this book, you will understand anger better and learn about healthy anger management techniques to help you R 2 cope with such a negative emotion. “The best book on writing ever published” (Patricia T. O’Conner, author of Woe Is I).   When Robert Graves and Alan Hodge decided to collaborate on this manual for writers, the world was in total upheaval. Graves had fled Majorca three years earlier at the start of the Spanish Civil War, and as they labored over their new project, they witnessed the fall of France and the evacuation of Allied forces at Dunkirk. Soon the horror of World War II would reach British soil as well, as the Luftwaffe began bombing London in an effort to destroy the resolve of the English people.   Graves and Hodge believed that at a time when their whole world was falling apart, the survival of English prose sentences—of writing that was clear, concise, and intelligible—had become paramount if hope were going to outlive the onslaught. They came up with forty-one principles for writing, the majority devoted to clarity, the remainder to grace of expression. They studied the prose of a wide range of noted authors and leaders, finding much room for improvement. Successful communication could mean the difference between war and peace, life and death, and they were determined to contribute to its survival. The importance of good writing continues today, as obfuscation, propaganda, manipulative language, and sloppy standards are all too common—and this classic guide is just as useful and important as ever.  Note: This edition restores the full, original 1943 text.   “To see what really expert mavens can do in applying their rule-based expertise to clearing up bad prose, get hold of a copy of The Reader Over Your Shoulder.” —The Atlantic

Abortion: The Ultimate Exploitation of Women unwinds the cultural myth that abortion empowers women. Not only are men responsible for promoting and legalizing abortion in America, they are the key beneficiaries. Using historical facts, medical research, and emotional personal stories, Fisher provides overwhelming evidence that abortion undermines women’s rights, victimizes women, children, and men, and is eroding the very fabric of our society.
