Beschreibung

In Sigrid Undset's novel "Jenny," the narrative intricately weaves the life and struggles of a young woman navigating the complexities of love, ambition, and societal expectations in early 20th-century Norway. The novel is characterized by its lyrical prose and rich psychological insight, reflecting the influences of modernism in its exploration of character introspection and emotional depth. Undset employs a vivid and intimate storytelling style, allowing readers to deeply engage with Jenny's innermost thoughts as she grapples with her identity in a society that often constrains women's roles and aspirations. Sigrid Undset, a Nobel Prize-winning author, drew from her own experiences of the feminist movement and societal changes affecting women's independence during her lifetime. Her upbringing in Norway, deeply rooted in the Scandinavian landscape and culture, informed her compelling portrayal of female characters who are both relatable and emblematic of broader societal struggles. Undset's keen understanding of human psychology stems from her own challenges, lending authenticity to her exploration of love and self-discovery in "Jenny." This book is a poignant invitation for readers to reflect on their values and aspirations in the face of societal constraints. "Jenny" serves as a remarkable lens through which to examine the evolving identity of women, making it a timeless exploration relevant to both feminist discourse and the quest for individual fulfillment. Undset's elegant prose and profound themes make this novel a must-read for anyone interested in literature that challenges the status quo.

'The Flying Fish' is unfinished but tells the story of an Englishman, Gethin Day, returning home after years in South America. There is a hint of the home-sickness Lawrence may have felt during his long exile. The bulk of the story is the time spent on the ship which is taking Day back to England. It is a ship of fools, a 'plague ship' and the only positive note is the joy Day sees in the play of the flying fish and porpoises around the ship. It is tantalising to speculate how Day would have adapted to English life again, confined to an old house in an old country.

Stella Benson was born on the 6th January 1892 in Easthope, Shropshire to parents who were landed gentry.
Her early years involved frequent household moves which was difficult for the child as she suffered from ill-health. Some of her early education was spent at schools in Germany and Switzerland and by 10 she had developed a lifelong habit of keeping a diary.
In the following years her parents separated, and she rarely saw her father. When she did, he encouraged to pause her writing until she had further experience and could better make sense of the world. When he died, she learned he had been an alcoholic.
A winter spent in the West Indies provided material for her first novel ‘I Pose’ published the following year in 1915.
During the War years she became involved in the women's suffrage movement and dedicated time outside of writing to support the troops and help the poor.
In 1918 she decided to travel spending much time in California, where she also tutored at the University of California, and continued to write. In China she met her future husband and after marrying in London, journeyed with him to his various Custom postings through Nanning, Beihai, and Hong Kong and the Far East.
The works continued to flow novels, short stories, travel essays all helped to build a deserved and burgeoning reputation.
Although her works are now in the forgotten and neglected department her writing style, characters, and narratives more than capably demonstrate her obvious talents.
Stella Benson died of pneumonia on the 7th December 1933, at Hạ Long in the Vietnamese province of Tonkin. She was 40.

Brideshead Revisited details the journey of Charles Ryder, who, through the memories of his interactions with an aristocratic English family, encounters various episodes of conversion and experiences the illuminating power of divine grace—which, in the words of G.K. Chesterton, tugs on human hearts “with a twitch upon the thread.” Lodged between two world wars and burdened by the stark collapse of culture, Charles Ryder comes face to face with the perils of sin and confronts the inescapable yearnings of faith.
