Summary

Arriving in the anaesthetic room for the first time can be a
daunting experience. You will be closely supervised, but everything
will seem very new. Surgery is a stressful life-event for the patient
and your job as an anaesthetist is to make it as safe and as
comfortable as you can whilst ensuring the best outcome possible.

Anaesthesia is no longer the preserve of the medical anaesthetist. It
increasingly features in undergraduate and postgraduate healthcare
education, and many of the competencies required need to be attained
quickly, in conjunction with new drugs and equipment.

This guide provides practical and clinically relevant advice in easily
understandable sections to give you confidence and prepare you for your
days in theatre - without the complicated physiology, pharmacology and
physics. It allows you to understand the most common drugs and provides
a rationale for using them. It’s the perfect quick, clinical reference for
dealing with common problems and emergencies; ideal for everyday use.

This book is invaluable for anaesthetists starting out in their career, but
is also highly recommended for Foundation, ACCS, ICM trainees, medical
students, operating department trainees and nurses. It also provides an
excellent revision basis for Primary FRCA candidates.

‘This book provides the basic background and ground rules for how anaesthetists
work, how they approach a problem and how one can prepare for it. Some of
the initial chapters could be usefully read by all surgeons, especially those in
Foundation Training posts, and medical students considering an anaesthetic or
intensive placement. The use of lists, key points and limited use of references help
make the book easy to read, or dip into between cases, and keep it a manageable
size whilst still providing a mine of information for the target audience.’

The fascinating story of Charles Darwin’s friend, fellow scientist, and champion.   Sir John Lubbock was an important Darwinist, witness to an extraordinary moment in the history of science and archaeology—the emotive scientific, religious, and philosophical debate which was triggered by the publication of Darwin’s On the Origin of Species in 1859.  Darwin’s Apprentice looks at Lubbock’s critical yet often overlooked role in the Darwinian campaign, including the ways in which Lubbock’s archaeological and ethnographic collections shaped both his work and personal life. It offers an enlightening view not only of the beginnings of Darwinism, but of the scientific world of late nineteenth-century Britain.

"What I find so rare and immediate in this journal is the self-grown quality of the knowledge gained from the presented experience. How many of us live with this degree of attention to the events of our experience..." - Reed Bye, Forward
This book is a series of short vignettes of a life lived in a way few human beings will ever know: in a tiny cabin, with no running water or wired electricity, at 10,000 feet altitude in the Rocky Mountains. The kicker: this was a year-round life, over 10 years. Thoreau spent two years at Walden Pond, Robert Louis Stevenson only two weeks on his "epic" journey through France. Jane's endurance and test of time brings even more depth and scope to her story. Nederland, Colorado locals still talk about seeing her snowshoe into town for supplies, speculating on her sanity. Hearing the author read this book helps one anchor that sanity, and how her personal, social experiment grew into a bonding of nature and woman that resounds well beyond a simple memoir.

"Reduce, reuse, recycle," urge environmentalists; in other words, do more with less in order to minimize damage. As William McDonough and Michael Braungart argue in their provocative, visionary book, however, this approach perpetuates a one-way, "cradle to grave" manufacturing model that dates to the Industrial Revolution and casts off as much as 90 percent of the materials it uses as waste, much of it toxic. Why not challenge the notion that human industry must inevitably damage the natural world? they ask. In fact, why not take nature itself as our model? A tree produces thousands of blossoms in order to create another tree, yet we do not consider its abundance wasteful but safe, beautiful, and highly effective; hence, "waste equals food" is the first principle the book sets forth. Products might be designed so that, after their useful life, they provide nourishment for something new-either as "biological nutrients" that safely re-enter the environment or as "technical nutrients" that circulate within closed-loop industrial cycles without being "downcycled" into low-grade uses (as most "recyclables" now are). Elaborating their principles from experience redesigning everything from carpeting to corporate campuses, the authors make an exciting and viable case for change.

In 2006, vaquita, a diminutive porpoise making its home in the Upper Gulf of California, inherited the dubious title of world's most endangered marine mammal. Nicknamed "panda of the sea" for their small size and beguiling facial markings, vaquitas have been in decline for decades, dying by the hundreds in gillnets intended for commercially valuable fish, as well as for an endangered fish called totoaba. When international crime cartels discovered a lucrative trade in the swim bladders of totoaba, illegal gillnetting went rampant, and now the lives of the few remaining vaquitas hang in the balance.
Author Brooke Bessesen takes us on a journey to Mexico's Upper Gulf region to uncover the story. She interviewed townspeople, fishermen, scientists, and activists, teasing apart a complex story filled with villains and heroes, a story whose outcome is unclear. When diplomatic and political efforts to save the little porpoise failed, Bessesen followed a team of veterinary experts in a binational effort to capture the last remaining vaquitas and breed them in captivity—the best hope for their survival. In this fast-paced, soul-searing tale, she learned that there are no easy answers when extinction is profitable.
Whether the rescue attempt succeeds or fails, the world must ask itself hard questions. When vaquita and the totoaba are gone, the black market will turn to the next vulnerable species. What will we do then?
