Summary

Sheila Hébert Collins retells the story of Little Red Riding Hood—Cajun style—in PetiteRouge, featuring illustrations by Chris Diket.   Little Red Riding Hood lives in the hearts of many, instilling in children everywhere a fear of cloaks and big, bad wolves, of course! Way down south in Louisiana, there lives a girl named Clotilde, but everyone calls her Petite Rouge because of the beautiful cloak she wears.   One day, Petite Rouge hurries through the swamp on her pirogue to bring her sick grandmère some soothing shrimp étouffée. Along the way she meets a friendly gator, the one her mother always warned her about: Taille-Taille. Polite and well-spoken, Taille-Taille’s behavior belies the fact that all he wants to do is gobble up Rouge, and her hood, too!   Petite Rouge and her grandmère are both fooled, but they come out whole and unharmed when the local shrimpers cut open dat der gator belly. What do they do with Taille-Taille? They cook him into a sauce piquante and faisdo doing the night away! Sound fun? You can make your own Alligator Sauce Piquante. Just follow the recipe at the end of the tale and bon appetite!   Full of Cajun words and phrases, accompanying definitions, and a pronunciation guide, Petite Rouge: A Cajun Twist to an Old Tale will teach children a petite peu about Cajun culture.

The National Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington, D.C. is held annually in remembrance of the first cherry tree planting on March 27, 1912. Now an international symbol of peace and friendship, the trees first came to the nation’s capital from Tokyo, Japan, at the insistence of Eliza Scidmore. Able to live a life different from most women in the late 1800s, Scidmore was dedicated to her ideas. She had the opportunity to travel with family and friends and wrote the first guidebook about Alaska while there on a trip. Wanting to share her adventures with others, she became the first woman to write for the National Geographic Society. But throughout her travels, she never forgot about the Japanese cherry trees she had seen while visiting her brother in Tokyo. It took her more than twenty years, but with the help of the president’s wife, Mrs. Taft; a Japanese scientist; and a lot of faith, Scidmore’s dream of beautifying her hometown came true.

“Grand storytelling style . . . Readers looking for page-turning adventure, a strong heroine, and some fun will find it all here.” —School Library Journal    Ever since that tragic night when her mother and guardian were murdered, thirteen-year-old Sarah has been living on her own and searching for the knight who was responsible. Her quest for revenge leads to an even greater adventure when she witnesses Queen Guinevere being kidnapped. Soon Sarah finds herself accompanying Sir Gawain and Squire Terence on a remarkable journey to rescue the Queen. In their travels they meet, among others, a mystery knight traveling incognito in a dung cart, a faery who becomes Sarah’s first friend in a long time, a reclusive monk who plans to spend the rest of his life building a tomb for Sir Lancelot, and a princess who might have a little more gumption than she appears to.   As the plot thickens, Sarah finds out more about the people she’s met and befriended, as well as about herself. She begins to learn the true consequences of vengeance and what it really means to be a princess.   “Morris reshapes traditional plot elements, infuses them with humor and fantasy, and creates a highly readable story . . . The novel is driven by a keen sense of justice and lightened by droll wit. A terrific cast of characters energizes the story, which plays out against a colorful, well-developed historical background.” —Booklist    “Another humorous and suspenseful tale of knightly intrigue.” —Publishers Weekly

The acclaimed children’s author shares vibrant retellings of the Bard’s timeless tales in this classic, illustrated collection for young readers.   As both a writer and a mother, E. Nesbit wanted an engaging way to share the great works of Shakespeare with children. In The Children’s Shakespeare, she adapted eleven of his plays—including Hamlet, Twelfth Night, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and others—into accessible stories that creatively capture all the essential elements.  The Children’s Shakespeare offers an ideal introduction to these works, simply told yet preserving their wit, humor, emotion, and drama. In E. Nesbit's gifted hands, these stories emerge with all the charm and grace of the very best fairy tales. Written in modern English and each no more than ten pages in length, the eleven plays featured in this volume afford children the opportunity to discover the magic of Shakespeare for themselves
