Summary

A Message to Garcia is a widely distributed essay written by Elbert Hubbard in 1899.

Hubbard was inspired by a daring escapade performed by an American soldier, 1st Lt. Andrew S. Rowan, just prior to the Spanish–American War. According to Hubbard, Rowan carried a message from President William McKinley to "Gen. Calixto García, a leader of the Cuban insurgents somewhere in the mountain fastness of Cuba—no one knew where." Hubbard compared Rowan's heroic effort to "the imbecility of the average man—the inability or unwillingness to concentrate on a thing and do it."

Inspector Cameron Rande is head of Homicide in Toronto's Police Service but he doesn't want to be chained to a desk. He assigns himself to head the investigation into the murder of a high-profile developer in one of Toronto's modern skyscrapers with a bullet from an ancient rifle. Rande and his team are soon plunged into a double murder probe as a contractor is beaten to death with a musical instrument out of the 1950s. Both deaths are tied to The Revelle, a downtown, iconic theatre, which had been slated for demolition by the dead men. Rande and his college-bound daughter Amelia then meet Estelle Croft, an actress who starred at The Revelle in its heyday in plays like Bell, Book and Candle. Estelle becomes the strangest suspect Rande had ever met. She introduces Cam and Amelia Rande to Franklin, her mysterious manservant, and to Denny Croft. Actually, Denny is a ghost. Estelle's former husband is interred in a crypt in Estelle's big house downtown, but pops out regularly to read books and talk with his wife. Amelia takes to Estelle and, eventually, Denny, but Rande tries to avoid believing in spirits. His detectives are attacked at the theatre as they tie the murder weapons to The Revelle's huge storage room. Rande then finds the theatre is haunted by another former actor and war hero Frank Cavello who died at the Revelle decades before. It is Frank who leads Rande to his prime suspect. It is also Frank who is the Ghost waiting in the wings. This is an intricate murder mystery set in North America's fourth largest city. It's also a ghost story of unrequited love between actors and of a marvelous theatre that just won't die. Thrills, chills and romance.

Sucked into becoming accomplices to the subsequent cover-up, they swear never to talk about what happened. Thirty years later, Tommy Devereaux has become a bestselling author, using writing as his therapy. Finally, he is ready to tell the world what happened, even if he disguises the killing as fiction. But his life is set to unravel when he is approached by a woman who asks for his autograph, leaving behind a note which reads: “You didn’t even change my name.” Tommy’s worst nightmare has come true. A figure from his past has returned, threatening to divulge his darkest secret unless he agrees to do everything she asks of him. Thus begins a deadly cat-and-mouse game that can only end with one or both of their destructions.   “Wilson provides serious shivers for readers.”—Kirkus Reviews    “Gripping, gory, and terrifying . . . impossible to put down, and the shock ending will leave readers reeling.”—Booklist   “Wilson is without a doubt one of the most talented authors today.”—Miami Books Examiner

When sixteen-year-old Amanda Verner's family decides to move from their small mountain cabin to the vast prairie, she hopes it is her chance for a fresh start. She can leave behind the memory of the past winter; of her sickly ma giving birth to a baby sister who cries endlessly; of the terrifying visions she saw as her sanity began to slip, the victim of cabin fever; and most of all, the memories of the boy she has been secretly meeting with as a distraction from her pain. The boy whose baby she now carries. When the Verners arrive at their new home, a large cabin abandoned by its previous owners, they discover the inside covered in blood. And as the days pass, it is obvious to Amanda that something isn't right on the prairie. She's heard stories of lands being tainted by evil, of men losing their minds and killing their families, and there is something strange about the doctor and his son who live in the woods on the edge of the prairie. But with the guilt and shame of her sins weighing on her, Amanda can't be sure if the true evil lies in the land, or deep within her soul.
