Summary

A philosophy student’s research draws him into the sexual underground of 1980s and early nineties New York John Marr is surprised he doesn’t have AIDS. He has been having near-daily sexual encounters with strange men since before the dawn of HIV, but he remains healthy. His initiation began in the bathroom of the Staten Island Ferry Terminal, and since then he has found himself at home in the darkest corners of Manhattan’s culture of anonymous gay sex. During the day, it is a different story, as Marr works on his graduate thesis—an analysis of the work of a brilliant 1970s philosopher who died mysteriously in one of the gay bars of Hell’s Kitchen. As his research and his sex life begin to converge, Marr senses that if AIDS doesn’t get him, something darker will.  The Mad Man, which the author dubbed a “pornotopic fantasy,” is more than a powerful work of philosophical erotica; it is a snapshot of a vanished moment in New York City’s gay history, when fear and lust commingled in a single powerful force.

Weeks later, while bathing naked on a remote beach, she?s surprised by two men on horseback, Tom and Earl, who inform her that she?s trespassing on private land. However, the two men already have plans for Cassie. She?s soon whipped, gagged and sexually used. But despite this horrifying treatment, Cassie is appalled to discover that she cannot control or hide the sexual heat and passion that their ruthless violation sends raging through her body. Later, the two men head out on horseback, a bound and naked Cassie with them. Arriving at the Circle T Ranch, she is handed off to the owner Travis and his son, Rod. Cassie is not the first woman that Travis has enslaved and he quickly recognizes in Cassie the sexual heat of a true slave. Though she may decry this terrible truth, she cannot ignore the devastating ecstasy that fills her body and mind as she is subjugated and used for their pleasure. Quickly fitted in slave-chains, Cassie learns that she?ll serve at the Circle T until Travis tires of her, then she?ll be sold to a new master. Life at the Circle T is soon filled with intrigue. With his marriage on the rocks, Rod enjoys venting his anger on the new slave, while his estranged wife Lila furtively instigates a torrid D/s affair with Cassie that leaves both women surprisingly pleasured. The Victorians may have attempted to show the world they were upright, strict and full of virtue but much of this thinking has been subverted by their erotic and pornographic writing. With a vast Empire to organise and rule Victorians authors also had a wealth of new locations in which to have their characters fornicate in their written erotic adventures. These purveyors of erotic literature were no slouches when it came to getting their materials into the hands and minds of others. They used one of the great tools of the day; the literary magazine. Engagingly in the great tradition of literary magazines who serialised many wonderful books the Victorians had their own pornographic magazine which ran for eighteen monthly issues from July 1879 to December 1880. That seems to be quite some enterprise when you consider just the business side of printing and distribution of it whilst one presumes the law was casting its beady eyes at you. On the literary side it managed to print six serialised novels with Flunkeyania or Belgravian Morals being one of them as well as many short stories and a whole host of other minutiae including ballads, poems, limericks, jokes, witticisms, puns, ditties all in textures from refined to coarse.

In early 80’s Ukraine is stricken by perestroika and struggles for “democracy”, Afghanistan is in flames of a war where hundreds of eighteen-year-old youths are killed every day. Their peer, Dan, a student of cinematography, hardly cares about social problems anywhere on the planet. But one fatal encounter with a mysterious young lady in a picturesque corner of the Carpathians changes his life forever. Unable to let go of his love after getting lost with her in the woods for one beautiful night, the young man’s fascination with the actress turns into an obsession. He deliberately goes through all the hell circles in Afghanistan, striving to burn out the traces of his unrequited love. Years later his native country just starts experiencing a real advertising boom amidst which he finds a new way to apply his creative talent and inner strengths. However, the past of his love rushes back into his life and now this obsession takes him from one continent to another.

The taut psychological thriller The Lost Button keeps the reader transfixed. The novel encompasses an entire era from the mid-70s of the previous century till the modern day with its geography stretching over the European region including Kiev, the Ukraine’s periphery, Russia and Montenegro, and at last the United States. It explores evergreen concepts of love, devotion, and betrayal and emphasizes the idea that whenever and wherever one lives, a tiny detail like a lost button has the power to set off a chain of events that would lead to either one’s greatest happiness or one’s greatest tragedy. It is about not looking back, but always valuing what you have – today and forever.

The Lost Button received first place in the “Coronation of the Word” competition in 2005 and subsequently was made into a feature film.
