Summary

SHIPPING CONTAINER HOMESThe idea of shipping containers being turned into homes is relatively new, but it is a growing fashion. It offers cheap, flexible, environmentally sound but stable and practical solutions to the housing challenges faced by many. This book will give you a clear and detailed insight into this trend. It will help you understand the process of creating your own shipping container home, or for those with a more abstract interest in the topic, it will offer handy information for your consideration. Inside, this book details the legislative requirements that exist around shipping container homes and informs you where ready-made floors and walls can be sourced. It will consider the myriad of benefits living in a shipping container home offers, but will also present some of the associated difficulties and challenges. This book will take you through the steps of creating your own home by adapting these readily available resources, and it will give guidance on designing your own internal living spaces in these flexible shells. It will look at matters such as heating, plumbing, air conditioning, insulation, and decoration, plus much more! By following the guidance in this book, those looking to enter the market for their own shipping container home will have an advantage over others who are scrolling through the internet trying to find relevant information. It will provide a sure and certain account of the processes to follow, which are reliable and simple to use. At the completion of this book, you'll be more than ready to begin planning and working on your very own shipping container home!

    Fire Canoe - Prairie Steamboat...

The story of steamboating in the Canadian West comes to life in the voices of those aboard the vessels of the waterways of the Prairies.

Their captains were seafaring skippers who had migrated inland. Their pilots were indigenous people who could read the shoals, sandbars, and currents of Prairie waterways. Their operators were businessmen hoping to reap the benefits of commercial enterprise along the shores and banks of Canada’s inland lakes and rivers. Their passengers were fur traders, adventure-seekers, and immigrants opening up the West. All of them sought their futures and fortunes aboard Prairie steamboats, decades before the railways arrived and took credit for the breakthrough.

Aboriginal people called them “fire canoes,” but in the latter half of the nineteenth century, their operators promoted them as Mississippi-type steamship queens delivering speedy transport, along with the latest in technology and comfort. Then, as the twentieth century dawned, steamboats and their operators adapted. They launched smaller, more tailored steamers and focused on a new economy of business and pleasure in the West. By day their steamboats chased freight, fish, lumber, iron ore, real estate, and gold-mining contracts. At night, they brought out the Edwardian finery, lights, and music to tap the pleasure-cruise market.

An unconventional and engaging take on Caribbean history

After a life-changing diagnosis, Dutch entrepreneur Jacob Gelt Dekker decides to take a step into the unknown. Setting sail from his home in Key West, he embarks on an odyssey around the Caribbean islands, navigating treacherous waters and nations forever shaped by the Age of Discovery and transatlantic slave trade. Soon he discovers that he is not alone on his boat. With him during the long days and nights at sea are Anansi the Spider, the West African trickster, and The Flying Dutchman, doomed to sail the oceans forever and harboring a terrible secret.

Together, this unlikely trio seeks to establish the truth about the history of the Caribbean. Along the way, they encounter famous pirates and unpick tales of untold riches, but also retrace the steps of the region’s slaves, finding out how events in Europe, the fledgling American colonies, and Africa sealed their fates. Informed by personal experience and the people he meets on the islands, Jacob Gelt Dekker offers an unconventional account that is key to understanding the Caribbean and its peoples today.

The Caribbean reads like a novel, providing us with a rollicking narrative and a rich brew of colorful facts.
