Summary

A vivid and moving portrait of America's farm familiesFarming is essential to the American economy and our daily lives, yet few of us have much contact with farmers except through the food we eat. Who are America's farmers? Why is farming important to them? How are they coping with dramatic changes to their way of life? In the Blood paints a vivid and moving portrait of America’s farm families, shedding new light on their beliefs, values, and complicated relationship with the land.Drawing on more than two hundred in-depth interviews, Robert Wuthnow presents farmers in their own voices as they speak candidly about their family traditions, aspirations for their children, business arrangements, and conflicts with family members. They describe their changing relationships with neighbors, their shifting views about religion, and the subtle ways they defend their personal independence. Wuthnow shares the stories of farmers who operate dairies, raise livestock, and grow our fruit and vegetables. We hear from corn and soybean farmers, wheat-belt farmers, and cotton growers. We gain new insights into how farmers assign meaning to the land, and how they grapple with the increasingly difficult challenges of biotechnology and global markets. In the Blood reveals how, despite profound changes in modern agriculture, farming remains an enduring commitment that runs deeply in the veins of today’s farm families.

Conventional wisdom says you have to graduate from college in order to get a good job and start making money. But what if you start your financial journey as a teen?
Robert T. Kiyosaki's Rich Dad Poor Dad for Teens (2004) contains all the financial knowledge from his best-seller Rich Dad Poor Dad (1997) restructured for teenagers who want to start their financial success story right now and not have to work for a salary their entire lives. Kiyosaki puts special emphasis on financial literacy and the importance of learning about money from a young age, instead of waiting until you meet a financial disaster.

Your organization's culture can feel like something that has a life of its own; it's long-standing, inherited, and seemingly impermeable—in fact, a strong culture is often an obstacle to doing new things or going in new directions. But leaders are the stewards of a company's culture and have the power to shape it. The best leaders know that organizational culture is a fundamental and powerful management tool that can drive positive outcomes.
We've combed through hundreds of articles in the Harvard Business Review archive and selected the most important ones to help you assess the type and current state of your company's culture, communicate change, do things differently, and anticipate and address implementation challenges.
This book will inspire you to: determine what type of culture you have, understand the psychology behind your company's social patterns, gather input on what needs to be fixed or initiated, communicate change, do things differently, and deal with implementation roadblocks.

In 1916, the Cambridge historian, F.J. Foakes-Jackson braved the wartime Atlantic to deliver the Lowell Lectures in Boston. In these wide-ranging and engaging talks, the author describes British life between 1750-1850. There are John Wesley's horseback peregrinations over thousands of miles of English countryside. Next, Foakes-Jackson introduces the mordant rural poet, George Crabbe, who began life as a surgeon apothecary and ended up as a parish rector who made house calls. He gives us a female convict, assorted Cambridge University dons, Regency fops and rakes, and Victorian slices of life from Dickens and Thackeray. In the last lecture we barrel over hedges and fences and through muddy lanes in headlong chase of the fox.

This title is laser focused on making you sound smarter become more respected by using them. Simply systematically eliminated words that did meet this model that are perfectly good words for other purposes. First excluded were slang & popular culture words such as angst, avant-garde, Catch 22, kitsch, red herring, and white elephant. These are all useful words to know, just not in this context. Then eliminated were those words whose meanings are often misconstrued such as disinterested and complement/compliment. And finally eliminated were those words that sound awkward in speech such as accolade, baroque, epiphany, philistine, tete-a-tete, tryst, unrequited, and waft. Included words must sound appropriate, work seamlessly, and not be "show off" words. The final test is the words had to be those that people nodded slightly at when heard because they enhanced meaning and not elicit a slight grimace. So we worked hard to eliminate grimace words.
