In a globalized world, where multinational companies have extensive power over millions of people, building positive organizational performance requires global leaders with virtues. Organizations, especially multinational ones, may be crucial engines of social and economic progress; global leaders' virtues and character strengths may be strong drivers of such an endeavor. One cannot demand of them that they be morally pure or that they assume responsibility for solving the most pressing public problems in the world. However, this book argues that they may be part of the solution, help in making the world a better place, and contribute to the realistic desiderata of a values-based capitalism.
Drawing on the Positive Organizational Scholarship movement, this book aims to provide a holistic approach to the virtues of leaders. It explores how virtues and character strengths may be put at the service of positive organizational performance, stressing that virtues represent the "golden mean" between the extremes of excess and deficiency, and discussing the perverse consequences of "excessive virtuousness". The book shares theoretical, anecdotal, and empirical evidence on the convergence between good virtues and good results, aiming to disseminate the idea that managers can be competent and competitive, while doing "good things right."

In the big picture, we may believe that everyone that we work with "has our back". However, the sad reality of life is that this is not the case. We need to have the skills and awareness to be looking out for people who want to sabotage our careers. We can learn what it takes to strive for greatness as a leader by listening to what athletes can tell us. However, we're going to need to be prepared to roll with the punches if the company decides to reorganize and we get put into a different position.
We always have to be on the lookout for that next job. If we want to keep our job search secret, then we'll need some help in figuring out what we'll need to do. Perhaps getting an executive MBA might help us in our job search.
There will be times in which we make mistakes. Depending on how big our mistake was, we'll need to know what steps we need to take now in order to deal with the results of our actions. In order to keep our jobs, we will always have to be developing new skills. In our case, this can include learning how to make better presentations and how to use a color wheel in order to make better looking slides to go along with our presentations.
There is always a chance that no matter how hard we try, we may end up getting laid off some day. The good news is that they is not the end of the world for us. What we need to understand is what outplacement services will be made available to us and how we can best make use of them.
