Summary

Why the free-market system encourages so much trickery even as it creates so much goodEver since Adam Smith, the central teaching of economics has been that free markets provide us with material well-being, as if by an invisible hand. In Phishing for Phools, Nobel Prize–winning economists George Akerlof and Robert Shiller deliver a fundamental challenge to this insight, arguing that markets harm as well as help us. As long as there is profit to be made, sellers will systematically exploit our psychological weaknesses and our ignorance through manipulation and deception. Rather than being essentially benign and always creating the greater good, markets are inherently filled with tricks and traps and will "phish" us as "phools."Phishing for Phools therefore strikes a radically new direction in economics, based on the intuitive idea that markets both give and take away. Akerlof and Shiller bring this idea to life through dozens of stories that show how phishing affects everyone, in almost every walk of life. We spend our money up to the limit, and then worry about how to pay the next month's bills. The financial system soars, then crashes. We are attracted, more than we know, by advertising. Our political system is distorted by money. We pay too much for gym memberships, cars, houses, and credit cards. Drug companies ingeniously market pharmaceuticals that do us little good, and sometimes are downright dangerous.Phishing for Phools explores the central role of manipulation and deception in fascinating detail in each of these areas and many more. It thereby explains a paradox: why, at a time when we are better off than ever before in history, all too many of us are leading lives of quiet desperation. At the same time, the book tells stories of individuals who have stood against economic trickery—and how it can be reduced through greater knowledge, reform, and regulation.

Do you know what the number one mistake most people make when it comes to goal setting is?
It's not knowing what they REALLY want. The thing is: If you don't know what you want, how will you know when you've got it?
Too often people set goals that are far too abstract – things like:
    “I want to be successful”
    “I want to be happy”
    “I want to be rich”
The trouble is, there's no concrete definition of what successful/happy/rich is.
My definition of “successful” might not be the same as yours. The amount of money that would make me feel as though I were “rich” could be more (or less) than would make you feel the same way.
So it's important that you have a SPECIFIC goal.
For example if you want to be “successful”, how do you define that? Do you want to be successful in business, in love, in sports?
Instead of saying “I want to be successful”, first define your goal as “I want to be successful in business” - if that's the sort of success you're after.
But I would narrow that down even further…
Something like: “I want to own a business with a one million dollar turnover and at least three full-time employees before the end of next year.”
Now you have something specific to aim for. You know EXACTLY what you want to achieve, and you've established a time-frame in which to achieve it. You can then break this large goal down into smaller goals to make your main goal more achievable.
This video course has been converted into an audio course that you can listen to any time, designed to help clarify your goals, focus your energy and radically change your life.

A look at Iceland’s 2008 meltdown from multiple perspectives: “The story is at once shocking and hilarious . . . But also a testament to human resilience.” —Keith Hart, London School of Economics   Iceland’s 2008 financial collapse was the first case in a series of meltdowns, a warning of danger in the global order. This full-scale anthropology of financialization and the economic crisis broadly discusses this momentous bubble and burst and places it in theoretical, anthropological, and global historical context through descriptions of the complex developments leading to it and the larger social and cultural implications and consequences. Chapters from anthropologists, sociologists, historians, economists, and key local participants focus on the neoliberal policies—mainly the privatization of banks and fishery resources—that concentrated wealth among a select few, skewed the distribution of capital in a way that Iceland had never experienced before, and plunged the country into a full-scale economic crisis. Gambling Debt significantly raises the level of understanding and debate on the issues relevant to financial crises, painting a portrait of the meltdown from many points of view—from bankers to schoolchildren, from fishers in coastal villages to the urban poor and immigrants, and from artists to philosophers and other intellectuals.  Gambling Debt is a game-changing contribution to the discussion of economic crises and neoliberal financial systems and strategies that touches upon anthropology, sociology, economics, philosophy, political science, business, and ethics.   “Honest, entertaining, and informative . . . Explores the changing distribution of wealth and the impact of privatization as well as the historical identity of Iceland and the numerous factors that came together to help produce such an economic meltdown.” —Choice  Publication supported in part by the National Science Foundation
