Summary

We are fooled by our brain and do not know it. We are not who we think we are. We never decide, and we can only know events in retrospect. Any act (including any thought) that we find ourselves launched upon is a commitment to the unknown because the act is unconscious until completed. It pops into existence. We cannot know whether we will successfully pick up a cup of tea or spill it, walk or trip, stand up or stumble. We do not, cannot, know what we are doing, only what we have already done. Life at every moment is an adventure! There is much more. Person-to-person communication is not possible. Our brain does not allow it. Awareness of our environment is a chimera. Self-knowledge unachievable. This may strike the ear as fatalistic, or self-defeating, or hopeless, but paradoxically it is the foundation of our freedom and responsibility. Neuroscience has finally freed us from the burdens of guilt and shame, while simultaneously providing an entirely new and exciting perspective on our identity.
In the mid-19th century, Darwin outlined the controversial Unified Theory of Biology. Since Einstein's 1915 Relativity Theory and the development of Quantum Theory in the 1920s, physicists have established GUT (grand unified theory) and are now working towards TOE (the theory of everything). But other fields of knowledge are also advancing. Currently, neuroscience is making unprecedented strides in understanding the workings of the brain. In this book, Hughes picks up on these traces to speculate upon a Unified Theory of Awareness which looks to transform our self-understanding as much as Relativity has changed our perspective on the cosmos. This history of Scottish hydropower vividly chronicles the mid-20th century public works projects that transformed the Highlands. In the thirty years after the Second World War, the construction projects of the North of Scotland Hydro-Electric Board changed the face of the Highlands. They brought electricity to nearly every region north of the Highland Line. Founded by Scotland’s idealistic Secretary of State Tom Johnston, these epic projects of hard labor in beautiful landscapes gave hope to Highland communities. By the time the last scheme was opened in Foyers in 1975, the engineers had built some fifty major dams and power stations, almost 200 miles of tunnel, 400 miles of road, and over 20,000 miles of power line. The Board had to overcome adverse weather and difficult terrain, as well as political opposition. The Dam Builders is a vivid account of these historic projects and includes eyewitness stories from many of the workers who made the electrification of the Highlands a reality.

If you don't like Christmas stories, don't read this one!And if you don't like dogs I don't know just what to advise you to do!For I warn you perfectly frankly that I am distinctly pro-dog and distinctly pro-Christmas, and would like to bring to this little story whatever whiff of fir-balsam I can cajole from the make-believe forest in my typewriter, and every glitter of tinsel, smudge of toy candle, crackle of wrapping paper, that my particular brand of brain and ink can conjure up on a single keyboard! And very large-sized dogs shall romp through every page! And the mercury shiver perpetually in the vicinity of zero! And every foot of earth be crusty-brown and bare with no white snow at all till the very last moment when you'd just about given up hope! And all the heart of the story is very,—oh very young! For purposes of propriety and general historical authenticity there are of course parents in the story. And one or two other oldish persons. But they all go away just as early in the narrative as I can manage it.—Are obliged to go away!Yet lest you find in this general combination of circumstances some sinister threat of audacity, let me conventionalize the story at once by opening it at that most conventional of all conventional Christmas-story hours,—the Twilight of Christmas Eve." - Summary by from the book

Dr. Royal R. Rife (May 16, 1888-August 5, 1971) was a prolific American inventor and early promoter of high-magnification time-lapse cinemicrography. In the 1930s, he claimed that by using his specially designed optical microscope, he could observe microbes that were too small to view with the current technology. Rife also invented a "beam ray" device that could potentially weaken or destroy cancer cells.
Rife still has a strong following among the wellness and holistic health communities, who believe that his anticancer technologies have been suppressed and should be given a thorough review. Royal Raymond Rife's devices are now being manufactured by independent electronics companies.

Napoleon's Buttons is the fascinating account of seventeen groups of molecules that have greatly influenced the course of history. These molecules provided the impetus for early exploration, and made possible the voyages of discovery that ensued. The molecules resulted in grand feats of engineering and spurred advances in medicine and law; they determined what we now eat, drink, and wear. A change as small as the position of an atom can lead to enormous alterations in the properties of a substance-which, in turn, can result in great historical shifts. With lively prose and an eye for colorful and unusual details, Penny Le Couteur and Jay Burreson offer a novel way to understand the shaping of civilization and the workings of our contemporary world.
