Summary

By the time he was three, Walker's parents were concerned enough about his delayed development to consult a paediatric neurologist. Doctors diagnosed autism and issued a grim prognosis: 'I hold out no hope for this child'. But they hadn't accounted for Walker's intelligence, affection, and sense of humour - or for the remarkable bonds that grew within his family.
Walker's father, Robert Hughes, tells a touching and inspiring story of discovering that their 'perfect little boy had a problem'. With disarming honesty and humour, the book tells how a family copes and keeps hope alive despite the staggering difficulties autism presents.
Available since: 05/15/2003.

For years, the legendary sports journalist pulled no punches. Cosell said of himself, "Arrogant, pompous, obnoxious, vain, cruel, verbose, a showoff. There's no question that I'm all of those things." His blustery, cocksure personality ensured that this larger-than-life sports commentator remains as well known today as many of the athletes he covered. His keen insights, ability to see past the glitz, and direct manner earned him widespread respect and admiration. Above all, one-of-a-kind Howard Cosell was entertaining. Sports fans of all ages will recognize Cosell's famous voice as he chronicles the history of Monday Night Football and the jocks he shared the booth with, notably Frank Gifford and Don Meredith.

Written in 1927, To the Lighthouse is Virginia Woolf's experimental and brilliant third novel. The narrative concerns the annual visits by the Ramsay family to their summer home in the Isle of Skye in Scotland between 1910 and 1920. Once again employing her unique, stream-of-consciousness style of writing, Woolf creates a fascinating and complex novel where the point of view of the narration switches between the various Ramsay family members and their guests. This semi-autobiographical book was hailed in its time as a breakthrough work of genius by critics and has gone on to become one of the most beloved and carefully studied books of all time. Named by both Modern Library and Time Magazine as as one of the 100 best English language novels of the 20th century, To the Lighthouse is an insightful study of family life, domestic tension and the complexity of human relationships. It is presented here in its original, unabridged format along with a biography of the author.

Ruskin Bond is eighty-nine years old: long past sixty, the age at which one becomes a senior citizen; also the age around which it is said one should think of retiring from active life. As the years go by, his contentment with living the life he has chosen--keeping to himself, with his family and his books, in Landour--has only grown stronger. He takes great joy in the world outside his window: the changing shades of nature, interesting people, good food, nice walks. Inside his room there are thoughts and memories, and the journal and letters he writes every day.
All of it makes for a wonderful life--and that is what this book is about. In his trademark warm, witty, whimsical style and his marvellously simple prose, Ruskin tells us how to enjoy the advancing years some of us are blessed with, and how to make the most of the amazing gift called life.
