Postmodernism has become the buzzword of contemporary society over the last decade. But how can it be defined? In this highly engaging introduction, the mysteries of this most elusive of concepts are unraveled, casting a critical light upon the way we live now, from the politicizing of museum culture to the cult of the politically correct. The key postmodernist ideas are explored and challenged, as they figure in the theory, philosophy, politics, ethics, and artwork of the period, and it is shown how they have interacted within a postmodernist culture.

The years following the signing of the Armistice saw a transformation of attitudes regarding military conflict as America attempted to digest the First World War. During these years popular film culture in the US created new ways of addressing the impact of the war on individuals and society. Filmmakers created works that promoted their own ideas about the depiction of wartime service—ideas that frequently conflicted with established, heroic tropes for the portrayal of warfare on film.Filmmakers spent years modifying existing standards and working through storytelling options before achieving a consensus regarding the fitting method for rendering war on screen. This process reached its peak during the Pre-Code Era of the early 1930s when the initially prevailing narrative would be briefly supplanted by an entirely new approach that questioned the premises of wartime service. The rhetoric of these films argued for an antiwar stance that questioned the wartime experience. For No Reason at All: The Changing Narrative of the First World War in American Film discusses a variety of Great War–themed films made from 1915 to the present, tracing the changing approaches to the conflict over time.

In the mid-20th century, it was a railroad; now it’s a public park. Built in the 1930s, 30 feet above the streets of Manhattan, the High Line was crucial for transporting cargo. But with the decline of rail transportation, it closed in 1980 and was abandoned. Almost three decades later, it opened again -- this time, as a shared space for greenery, art and leisure. Jeffrey Brown reports.

John Dryden and William D'Avenant's Restoration adaptation of Shakespeare's The Tempest preserves the main plot and characters of the original. Prospero, the former Duke of Milan, lives on an isolated island with his daughter Miranda, and plans to take revenge on his brother Antonio, who usurped his throne. He is aided by his servant, the airy sprite Ariel, and is hated by his other servant, the monster Caliban. Dryden and D'Avenant added in a number of characters: Dorinda, Prospero's other daughter, Hippolito, a young man who has never seen a woman, Sycorax, Caliban's sister, and more spirits and comic mariners. They also added more song, dance, and spectacle. Their version was considered the definitive Tempest until the 19th century. - Summary by Elizabeth KlettCastNarrator/Miranda/Stephano: Elizabeth KlettMustacho/Third Devil/Neptune: Kristin GjerløwVentoso/Pride: Frances BrownTrincalo/Fraud: mbHippolito/Cabin-boy: balaAlonzo: Algy PugAntonio: Leonard WilsonGonzalo: Bob NeufeldFerdinand: Eden Rea-HedrickProspero: Bruce PirieAriel/Aeolus: Libby GohnMilcha/First Devil/Amphitrite: AvailleCaliban/Second Devil/Tethys: Alan MapstoneDorinda: MaryankaSycorax/Murder/Oceanus: Lucy PerryAudio edited by Elizabeth Klett
