Summary

Preface:
"Those who delight in roaming about amongst the fields and lanes, or have spent any time in a country house, can hardly have failed to notice the custodian of the woods and covers, or to observe that he is often something of a "character." The Gamekeeper forms, indeed, so prominent a figure in rural life as almost to demand some biographical record of his work and ways. From the man to the territories over which he bears sway—the meadows, woods, and streams—and to his subjects, their furred and feathered inhabitants, is a natural transition. The enemies against whom he wages incessant warfare—vermin, poachers, and trespassers—must, of course, be included in such a survey. Although, for ease and convenience of illustration, the character of a particular Keeper has been used as a nucleus about which to arrange materials that would otherwise have lacked a connecting link, the facts here collected are really entirely derived from original observation."

A rookie outsider chases his sports-obsessed dream to relive his football glory days in “the ultimate fan book” (The New York Times).   Bob Cowser, Jr. is a happy husband, father, and English professor in upstate New York. Only one thing is missing: the exhilaration he felt as a young man in sports-crazy Tennessee when he took the field for high school football games. In what is every Monday morning quarterback’s fantasy, Bob joins the Watertown Red & Black, the country’s oldest semi-professional football team, hungry to win its first championship in two decades. Over the next five months, and with the hesitant blessing of his wife, Candace, Cowser drives the lonely sixty miles for try-outs in a former mill town of soldiers, corrections officers, and blue-collar workers.   A far cry from his leafy campus, the “Professor,” as his teammates call him, must work hard to earn the respect of these hard-edged men—some of them local celebrities—and the confidence of his coach, a former mill worker who has never used a playbook. Balancing the demands of family and academe with the rigors of practice and game play, Cowser must find a way to fit his childhood dream into his real life as an adult.   “Deserv[ing] to join the ranks of great football books like George Plimpton’s Paper Lion, Frederick Exley’s A Fan’s Notes, and William Morris’s The Courting of Marcus Dupree” (Publishers Weekly), Dream Season invites us onto the line of scrimmage for each heartbreaking loss and breathtaking win, into the locker room of a fabled team challenged by a roller-coaster season, and ultimately into the heart of a man with a persevering thirst for glory. “Real, vivid, sensitive, accessible, warm, brutal, and wholly consuming,” this remarkable story reminds us why we love the games we play (Lee Gutkind, author of Forever Fat: Essays by the Godfather).

These essays by the legendary sports writer “put readers right in the galleries” watching “all the great golfers, from Harry Vardon to Jack Nicklaus” (The New York Times Book Review). In this classic anthology, Herbert Warren Wind recreates Ben Hogan’s stirring performance in the third round of the 1967 Masters, when the fifty-four-year-old former champion turned back the clock to birdie six of the final nine holes and send spectators home “as exhilarated as schoolboys.”   At the 1964 US Open, the dean of American golf writers captures the drama and excitement of “one of the most inspiring stories in American golf”: Ken Venturi’s heroic victory over Arnold Palmer, Tommy Jacobs, and a case of heat exhaustion to win his only major championship.   From Harry Vardon to Steve Ballesteros, Pebble Beach to Ballybunion, the British Open to the President’s Putter, this generous and entertaining volume contains Herbert Warren Wind’s most famous essays on the sport he loved above all others. Vivid, eloquent, and insightful, Following Through showcases a master craftsman at the very top of his form.
