A nuclear priesthood has arisen in Russia. From portable churches to the consecration of weapons systems, the Russian Orthodox Church has been integrated into every facet of the armed forces to become a vital part of Russian national security, politics, and identity. This extraordinary intertwining of church and military is nowhere more visible than in the nuclear weapons community, where the priesthood has penetrated all levels of command and the Church has positioned itself as a guardian of the state's nuclear potential. Russian Nuclear Orthodoxy considers how, since the Soviet collapse in 1991, the Church has worked its way into the nuclear forces, the most significant wing of one of the world's most powerful military organizations.

Dmitry Adamsky describes how the Orthodox faith has merged with Russian national identity as the Church continues to expand its influence on foreign and domestic politics. The Church both legitimizes and influences Moscow's assertive national security strategy in the twenty-first century. This book sheds light on the role of faith in modern militaries and highlights the implications of this phenomenon for international security. Ultimately, Russian Nuclear Orthodoxy interrogates the implications of the confluence of religion and security for other members of the nuclear club, beyond Russia.

  • The Myth of Left and Right - How the Political Spectrum Misleads and Harms America - cover

The Myth of Left and Right - How...

A groundbreaking argument that the political spectrum today is inadequate to twenty-first-century America and a major source of the confusion and hostility that characterize contemporary political discourse.

As American politics descends into a battle of anger and hostility between two groups called "left" and "right," people increasingly ask: What is the essential difference between these two ideological groups? In The Myth of Left and Right, Hyrum Lewis and Verlan Lewis provide the surprising answer: nothing. As the authors argue, there is no enduring philosophy, disposition, or essence uniting the various positions associated with the liberal and conservative ideologies of today. Far from being an eternal dividing line of American politics, the political spectrum came to the United States in the 1920s and, since then, left and right have evolved in so many unpredictable and even contradictory ways that there is currently nothing other than tribal loyalty holding together the many disparate positions that fly under the banners of "liberal" and "conservative." Cutting against the grain of most scholarship on polarization in America, this book shows why the idea that the political spectrum measures deeply held worldviews is the central political myth of our time and a major cause of the confusion and vitriol that characterize public discourse.

    I Think I Own That - John...

John Locke: Enlightenment philosopher, father of liberalism, inventor of “natural rights,” and accidental spiritual patron of land developers, libertarians, and your uncle who won’t shut up about property taxes.
In this gloriously sarcastic takedown of one of Western philosophy’s most over-quoted minds, Sophia Blackwell (Kant You Not, No Self, No God, No Clue) guides you through Locke’s greatest hits—including:
The blank slate theory, which basically says you’re born dumb and the world makes you worse
His ideas on identity, which collapse the second you forget your phone password
His version of consent, which mostly consists of “You didn’t leave, so I assume you’re fine with it.”
And of course, property rights—where mixing your labor with the earth somehow makes it yours, and stealing land becomes morally correct as long as you bring a shovel
Locke’s political philosophy inspired democracies, revolutions, and every 400-comment Reddit thread titled “Taxation is theft.”
This is not a respectful biography.
This is a roast. A eulogy. A survival guide for understanding how Locke gave us:
    Liberalism
    Landlords
    Legal headaches
And a political system that thinks fencing off a patch of dirt = moral superiority
    Perfect for:
    Recovering philosophy students
    Political skeptics
    Enlightenment haters
    Property law survivors
And anyone who wants to laugh while questioning whether government is just a giant metaphor for a really passive-aggressive roommate agreement
You don’t need to read Two Treatises of Government.
You just need to know Locke said, “I think I own that,” and people believed him.

There are many challenges in the teenage years. Young people often feel pressure to achieve at school. They struggle to negotiate social intricacies. They battle to understand and deal with their own internal emotional world.
And, on top of all this, they ponder how they will carve out their future.
Teen Time is written for teenagers. Topics of interest are easily selected and the reader is encouraged to consider a range of perspectives for situations they find challenging.
Covering a wide range of issues presented frequently in counselling sessions by 13-17 year olds, Teen Time invites teenagers to make time for self-reflection, and to consider alternative possibilities, rather than acting on impulse. It encourages them to choose how they want to be in every area of their life.
Helen Middleton, a psychologist in private practice, draws on her extensive experience in working with young people as a teacher, secondary school Guidance Officer, gestalt and family therapist. She addresses the hopes and concerns commonly expressed by teenagers. This user-friendly guide is judgement-free, practical, and relatable.
Because it details the many issues confronting teenagers, Teen Time is also a valuable resource for parents, teachers, beginning counsellors, social workers, and youth workers.
    About the Author
Helen Middleton gained a Master’s degree in Education Studies in 1993, and worked as a Guidance Officer in Queensland schools for 15 years. During this time she continued her studies and completed a post-graduate training program in family therapy. She became a Registered Psychologist and completed a second Master’s degree in 2006 in Gestalt Therapy. The same year, Helen moved to Hobart and worked in EAP programs and in private practice. Missing work with young people, she took on regular days at Headspace in 2009, working with 12–26 year olds.
