Summary

Mikhail Aleksandrovich Vrubel is as a rule observed among the Russian artists of the Symbolist movement. Indeed, he obviously stood isolated from modern art tendencies; therefore the source of his atypical way should be finding in Byzantine and Early Renaissance art. Even in his first works, he demonstrated great talent for drawing and an idiosyncratic style. He would later develop a affinity for fragmentary composition and an "unfinished touch". In the words of an one art historian, "his palette acquired new strong saturated tones resembling the iridescent play of precious stones". In his mature period Vrubel developed a keen interest in Oriental arts, and particularly Persian carpets, and even attempted to imitate their texture in his paintings. Like other artists associated with the Art Nouveau style, he excelled not only in painting but also in applied arts, such as ceramics, majolica, and stained glass. He also produced architectural masks, stage sets, and costumes.

The Ghettos of Nazi-Occupied Poland

This pictorial history presents a vivid and harrowing exploration of Jewish ghettos during the Nazi occupation of Poland during WWII. 
 
Following the 1940 invasion of Poland, the Nazis established ghettos in cities and towns across the country with the initial aim of isolating the Jewish community. These closed sectors were referred to as Judischer Wohnbezirk or Wohngebiet der Juden (Jewish Quarters). Drawing on a wealth of historical images, this volume shows the harsh and deteriorating conditions of daily life in these restricted areas.  
 
In reality, these ghettos were holding areas where Jews were kept before being transferred to concentration, extermination, and work camps. Aware of their imminent fate, which included the threat of family separation, enslavement, and death, underground resistance groups sprung up staged numerous uprisings which were brutally and callously suppressed. 
 
The Nazis’ ultimate aim was the liquidation of the ghettos and the extermination of their inhabitants in furtherance of The Final Solution. This may seem unthinkable today but, as this book graphically reveals, they worked to achieve their objective regardless of human suffering.

Mothers, Comrades, and Outcasts in East German Women's Film merges feminist film theory and cultural history in an investigation of "women's films" that span the last two decades of the former East Germany. Jennifer L. Creech explores the ways in which these films functioned as an alternative public sphere where official ideologies of socialist progress and utopian collectivism could be resisted. Emerging after the infamous cultural freeze of 1965, these women's films reveal a shift from overt political critique to a covert politics located in the intimate, problem-rich experiences of everyday life under socialism. Through an analysis of films that focus on what were perceived as "women's concerns"—marital problems, motherhood, emancipation, and residual patriarchy—Creech argues that the female protagonist served as a crystallization of socialist contradictions. By framing their politics in terms of women's concerns, these films used women's desire and agency to contest the more general problems of social alienation and collectivism, and to re-imagine the possibilities of self-fulfillment under socialism.

Will and No Will or a Bone for...

This "Afterpiece"  - a short play to follow a main production - was first produced in 1746. It was based on Regnard's five-act comedy le Legetaire Universel (1707), which is itself a composite of Italian comedy with echoes of Molière, moving from scene to scene with little effort at logical consistency or structure but treating each scene autonomously for its own comic value.
