ERIC HOFFER BOOK AWARD SHORTLIST FINALIST, BUSINESS CATEGORYNATIONAL FEDERATION OF PRESS WOMEN REGIONAL FINALIST, GENERAL NONFICTIONINDEPENDENT PUBLISHER BOOK AWARDS GOLD MEDAL, CURRENT EVENTS Near midnight on May 23, 2012, the New York Times broke the story that Advance Publications, the New York-based owner of about three dozen US newspapers, would use its 175-year-old New Orleans Times-Picayune as the testing ground for a risky experiment. The Picayune—;which won fierce local devotion, international acclaim, and two Pulitzer Prizes for its heroic coverage of the aftermath of 2005's Hurricane Katrina—;would become a three-day-per-week publication and shift its focus to its much derided nola.com Web site, leaving New Orleans as the largest US city without a daily newspaper. The profitable newspaper, with the country's highest readership penetration in a city its size, then proceeded to purge its veteran newsroom, antagonize much of the city and state, attract negative national and international attention, and jeopardize its vaunted reputation—;all in an effort to create a new blueprint for the profitable operation of American newspapers in today's increasingly digital world. The Times-Picayune wasn't the first or last Advance Publications newspaper to undergo this transformation. The company began implementing this plan at many of its newspapers in 2009 despite waves of protest. However, the Times-Picayune was its foremost guinea pig. In a desperate attempt to recapture public favor, Advance implemented daily newsstand-only editions of the Times-Picayune to supplement its scant coverage. Author Rebecca Theim's deft treatment of the impact on employees and region; the enigmatic owners of Advance Publications; and Advance Publication's ambitious business model is a revelatory exposé of the swiftly changing face of journalism.

  • Most Famous Silent Film Actors The: The History of the Actors Who Helped Shape Hollywood in the Roaring Twenties - cover

    Most Famous Silent Film Actors...

Only a select few actors become international stars in their time, but none had as unique a career as Charlie Chaplin. Chaplin was the first true film star, and he managed to do so even when films were still silent. He has been honored with too many awards to count, and the fact that his name remains instantly recognizable nearly a century after his first film is a testament to his influence. Chaplin is known for the singular blend of pathos and humor evinced by his films, and it is not uncommon for audiences to laugh and cry at alternate points of a Chaplin film, a trait that continues to endear audiences even to this day.
In the 1920s, the burgeoning movie industry was starting to come into its own, and alongside actor and director Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton was at the peak of Hollywood. It’s no surprise that Keaton was so effective in silent films, because he had been practicing comedy in his family’s vaudeville acts as “The Little Boy Who Can’t Be Damaged”, becoming a popular performer by the age of 5. Indeed, his physical form of comedy, which initially involved having his father throwing him around the stage, translated well onto the screen, and some of his slapstick and other comic gags remain legendary even today, in part because Keaton practiced his own stunts.
Everything about Rudolph Valentino, from his body to the characters he played, was exotic. His career may have been abbreviated by his premature death at the age of 31, but Valentino popularized the (somewhat racist) stereotype of the “Latin lover” in Hollywood, and even his name was markedly more out of the ordinary than those of other actors. In an era dominated by hyper-masculine actors like Douglas Fairbanks, or comedians such as Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton, Valentino had a more ethnic and mysterious appeal, and he was lusted after by women to a degree that remains unsurpassed in the industry.

    The History of Islam's Holiest...

Mecca is now best known for being Islam’s holiest city, revered as the birthplace of Muhammad and the site where Allah first revealed the Qu’ran to him. Within Mecca is the Ka’aba, a building housed within the Al-Masjid al-Haram (Great Mosque) that is considered the holiest site, and wherever they are in the world, Muslims face in the direction of the Ka’aba while praying. A pilgrimage to Mecca is considered a necessity for devout Muslims at some point in their lives, and the city itself is off limits to non-Muslims. Indeed, Mecca is so integral to Islam that the name of the city has entered the English lexicon and is a commonplace reference to any area closely associated with something (such as Paris often being called the mecca of fashion).
Even centuries before the birth of the Prophet Muhammad, Jews settled in the area that became Medina to escape persecution at the hands of the Babylonians and Romans, meaning the area and its arid environment brought inhabitants precisely because it wasn’t an attractive or resource rich area. In fact, the city fated to become the second holiest city in Islam earned that spot simply by straddling trade routes to the religious city of Mecca, which brought traders and pilgrims in large enough numbers to make it a trade center.
Jerusalem’s particular importance to the religion of Islam is without question one of the major sticking points in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Prior to Israeli control, Jerusalem had been predominantly controlled by Muslim rulers since the 7th century and had been used as a type of political currency, legitimizing the ruling dynasty’s claim over the city. For the world’s Muslim population, Jerusalem is a holy site because Muslims believe the Prophet Muhammad visited Jerusalem where he ascended to heaven during the famous “Night Journey.” There was also a period of time during the Prophet’s life when Muslims prayed in the direction of Jerusalem, as opposed to Mecca.
